I am still surprised at the attitude of some students

Posted Oct17-09 at 01:20 AM by Integral

Math class has been progressing much as expected. The basic properties, Commutative, associative, and distributive as well as the identity elements have been presented. I am actually surprised at the level of rigor with which the material is presented. The teacher defined the absolute value as the distance from zero. Which is my mind is a super definition.

There is girl in the math class who just makes me shake my head. She just does not seem to care, never makes any effort to do work in class or even listen to the teacher. She just talks to the boys sitting around her. Today when called upon to factor 30, she replied,

" Oh, I can't do that. I don't now the multiplication table."

some people even advanced scientists seem to stop learning when the hormones start to set in.
i have associated with highly educated people who cant grasp very basic things, like trying to make a perpetual motion machine, and cant actually grasp that energy has to come from some where.
and also high school only educated people that can tackle some of the worlds biggest projects.
todays students have cheap calculators every where so why learn the tables they will only help you make a mistake if you forget a decimal point or some thing

If I was a teacher I would answer her : Without discriminating you, I think you'd be better at home studying your tables or in primary school class for math. I will send you a photocopy of the course so that you won't get disfavored when you catch up the very basic math".

Its funny cause in high school many teachers force their students to purchase calculators, and I totally agree that it strips a huge portion of the knowledge process from the students. I honestly think that calculators should be used mainly for programming classes or math when you want to show the students what graphs look like. BUT in my opinion i dont think much can be done about the hormones thing.

So, is it because she is gabbing with the boys around her, or because you are not one of the boys around her?

Actually, being 31 and getting ready to return to school myself, I am currently putting together my "obnoxious school kids kit." It will contain earplugs, a slingshot, and 22 ounces of Vodka.
