What would be the symptoms if a very large Coronal Mass Ejection struck the Earth? (I mean much stronger than anything we've observed)
Would it be possible for such a CME to completely disrupt the Earth's magnetic field?
I'm curious, because a random thought struck me while reading National Geographic (yes, a real hot bed of scientific fact I know ) -- that CMEs might be responsible for the reversal of polarity of the Earth's magnetic field. I didn't know where to look, though, to reject this hypothesis (or support it, if the case may be).
