What Is the Subshell Designation for l=5 in Quantum Mechanics?

In summary, an electron orbital is a cloud-like region around the nucleus of an atom where electrons are most likely to be found. The shape of an orbital is determined by the energy level and sublevel of the electron, with the energy level representing the distance from the nucleus and the sublevel representing the shape (s, p, d, or f). An orbital can hold a maximum of two electrons with opposite spins. There are two types of orbitals: atomic orbitals, which refer to the space around a single atom, and molecular orbitals, which refer to the space around a molecule and are formed by the combination of atomic orbitals from different atoms. The periodic table relates to electron orbitals by organizing elements based on their electron configurations

Question:
How many orbitals have the values n = 6 and l = 5?

Attempt:
I said zero initially, since a l value of 0=s, 1=p, 2=d, 3=f, so there shouldn't be a 5?

I know this is wrong now but why? What is 5= ?

What is an electron orbital?

An electron orbital is a region of space around the nucleus of an atom where electrons are most likely to be found. It is often represented as a cloud-like shape.

What determines the shape of an electron orbital?

The shape of an electron orbital is determined by the energy level and sublevel of the electron. The energy level refers to the distance from the nucleus, while the sublevel refers to the shape of the orbital (s, p, d, or f).

How many electrons can occupy an orbital?

An orbital can hold a maximum of two electrons, as long as they have opposite spins.

What is the difference between an atomic orbital and a molecular orbital?

An atomic orbital refers to the space around a single atom, while a molecular orbital refers to the space around a molecule. Molecular orbitals are formed by the combination of atomic orbitals from different atoms.

How do electron orbitals relate to the periodic table?

The rows of the periodic table correspond to the energy levels of the electrons, while the columns correspond to the sublevels. This helps to organize the elements based on their electron configurations and properties.
