Hi, I wish to plot a 3d surface but as of now have not been able to!
I wish to plot z=f(x,y)=[x²+y²-1]^1/2 restricted to the domain:
dom(f) = {(x,y)|=1 ≤ x² + y² ≤5}
Any step by step instructions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Has anyone heard of the journals published by this group, Scientific Journals International (SJI)? Their website is http://www.scientificjournals.org/
Are these journals generally respected in the scientific community?
Saw this interesting article and wondered what PF thought of it since its close to home. Personally I don't see the scienctific method being replaced anytime soon.

Edit: Because of its predictive nature that is.
How do you write in scientific notation "the (SI) units of x are..."?
For example, the SI units of time are seconds. Is there any succinct way I can write this? Maybe it's like this:
{time} = s
?
Scientific consensus as described by Wiki,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_consensus
Is not some thing that is set in stone, as at the bottom of the wiki article shows SC can change, so is it safe to make decisions on the findings of SC?
My vote goes to
"WARNING: This product contains lead, a harmful substance in the State of California."
But outside the State of California, eat all the lead you want!
[SOLVED] scientific experiment lakoffs theory
Homework Statement
i am attempting to deduce the relationship between the human brain and colours according to gender.
i aim to compile evidence of a large test case (which would likely rival lakoff's) to produce a detailed report to combat or...
After all, fortran isn't object oriented and it's used a lot by scientists.
And a lot of scientists also use C, which isn't object oriented either.
So someone told me that the four languages to know (for theoretical biology) are C, Java, Perl, and Python.
This may be a weird question, but oh well. Way back during the Scientific Revolution it would have been possible to define mass as acceleration divided by force right? Then you'd have F = a/m, and the units for force would be different than they are now.
I heard somewhere that the goal of physics is to describe the most amount of phenomenon in the fewest terms. I really like that for some reason.
Of course then there is the scientific method, which I am less fond of. I wonder, in this day and age, is the scientific method actually limiting...
ok in my philosophy course we just started studying science and my teacher is TELLING us that the scientific method is WRONG.
I asked him how and he says that because it doesn't work leads to wrong answers etc. etc. he pointed out about how we didn't know about organisms that can live smaller...
If you follow this link you will find the master journal list at the bottom of the page. There is a search engine that allows one to search by a number of different criteria. This is a list of acceptable references when citing scientific theories and published papers. If a journal is not...
Hi All !
here is a quote from the movie Little Buddha(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107426/)
"Buddha could see beyond universe.Buddha has seen ultimate reality of all things."
Although the statement looks simple but it didnt make enough sense to me.It is also said that "we can see only...
Does anybody know how to read and write matrices in GSL. I am confused by what is given on the website. It says something about binary format which I have no idea about.
Isn't there any other simple way of reading the matrices as we do in 'C'?
Hello, I am beginning rudimentary work on a senior thesis. I am getting tired of hassling with Word to format all my formulas and proofs, and I thought about using proTeXt but I don't want to download 540 mb. My friend told me (a few years ago!) about a program called "Tech," but he might have...
I was with a group of religous friends and they started talking about the "true meaning of prayer". I felt like changing the subject so I diverted the conversation to the question of free will. I said that since the brain controls what the body does and the brain is a physical entity which...
Hi guys. I want to know if anybody can tell me a program which helps to do draws and diagrams. I want to do figures like those what appear in electromagnetic and waves book. For example, draw an arrow and label the angle with a line as "alpha" or thinngs like it.
Thank you.
I like to read science books as the content interests me. Whenever I pick out a new book, I may or may not be familiar with the author, but I always hope that the book mainly contains scientific fact, and not just the personal opinion of the author. Usually, you can tell when the author may be...
I am writing a science based report on cantilevers. My question is that,
when I draw designs, does it have to be proportional/scaled if its just in the report as a presentation or does it not matter? I was thinking that becasue my structures are small, 43 cm by 15 cm, I could scale it to fit...
The global warming skeptics advance arguments against the conclusions of the IPCC. They argue that anthropogenic global warming has not been "proven".
But there is no such thing as scientific proof. There are merely falsifiable theories. The 'proof' of a positive theory is simply the result...
this isn't crack pottery or really that philosophical so that's why i posted it here.
obviously science itself isn't faith based, we expect repeatable results and testable hypotheses from our scientists.
but there are open problems and all the people that see all the good science has done...
calculating SCIENTIFIC NOTATION by hand help please.
((4*10^5)(5*10^-7)) / (2*10^-3)
im getting 10 and the answer but its should be 100 can you please tell me what i am so posted to do step by step please.
I was trying to search on the forums for threads of conferences but i couldn't find any or glanced to fast.
So what are some of the interesting conferences that peopel have been to that (current or potential) graduate students should look into?
List any field you want (but any pertaining...
Hard to decide which forum this should be in, sorry if it's not appropriate here.
I am writing a science article as a university project. We have been told to reference any pictures, but my only picture if the opening / title picture, with the title embedded in it.
But I am not sure how I...
I am really new at this ( I guess you can tell :blushing:) so this is probably a stupid question but where can we access authentic scientific journals?
I know that books are considered second sources, and the paper journals publish are suppose to be the first source of information...:shy:..
i have a question for your minds to wonder about. i don't know the answer but i would love to hear your opinions or facts if you have any. now i am probably the hugest trekkie a person can be. i love star trek, it is one of the things that got me into science. anyways, what makes Star Trek...
The epistemic interest and technical applications of Science are obvious.
A lot of scientists think that Science is the only possible way to the knowledge of the "reality". So, it would be only a matter of time the conquest by Science of all the old metaphysical questions.
I am not in...
I was in a library recently and was struck by the shear number of journals. Journals often focus on some very specific topic, contain many thousands of articles going back more than 100 years. What is the motivation for people to submit papers to journals? I would expect that doing so would...
Is anyone here a member of the Scientific American Book Club? If so, have you had any problems with them?
Because, as you may have guessed, I'm finding it difficult to resolve an issue with them and unfortunately, their idea of customer service is to ignore my emails these days. :rolleyes...
Hello, I'm new to these forums, so please forgive any problems with my post. In particular, I wasn't sure where to put this post.
I'm working on a scientific programming problem in Java, and I don't have a huge amount of familiarity with either scientific programming or Java, so you can...
Right. Even well-documented observations that do not fit easily into a
preconceived notion of how the world should work, may be rationalized away
or just neglected. One example of this is the observed mean acceleration
{\dot n} of the Moon; from lunar laser ranging experiments this has the...
Recently, I've been trying to brush up on my writing skills in preparation for the coming graduate school storm. I've gone through Strunk and White's book twice, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a good reference, on-line or otherwise, about scientific writing. I'm just looking to brush up...
I pretty much know how to solve this problem, but I have a simple question.
The question asks a charge of +45 uC (u is coefficient of friction and C is Columb). Now what would that translate into scientific notation?
Because I know 3 uC equals 3.0 x 10^-6, but what about double figures? Thanks
I am interest how one might falsify a scientific theory when we consider the objection from the quine-duham thesis. We can always blame one of the hypothesis that goes to making a perdiction, when the prediction does not correspond to reality.
Obviously, if you wanted to express 500,000 in Scientific Notation, you would get:
5 x 10^5
My question is, what if you were asked to express 570,098?
Move the decimal 5 places to the left, and you'd get 5.70098. Apply Scientific Notation, and you get
5.70098 x 10^5
However, this...
Hey guys, I was wondering if someone could give me some insight to which scientific calculater is best for a Biology major...me =)
I just bought the TI-84 Plus but now I'm thinking I probably should've gotten the TI-89. Does anyone have any experience with this? I know the TI-89 is a better...
whoa for the biggest 1st post bump ever
I've been involved in a few discussions over racism this week, so it's all new and fresh to me; well, I decided to post my thoughts here, for historical reference.
This thread was looking for "scientifical" definition of human races that could be used in...
I need to find out if I am right? I am in BIO 161 and need help answering these questions.
Sara and Michael tested electromagnets to see if the size of wire they used would make the magnets stronger. They selected 6 steel nails of the same size to make the magnets. Using 6 different sizes of...
So I've got an MSc in Engineering physics and I'm now deciding if I should go find a job in the industry, or stay in school to get a PhD, more specifically in Scientific computing and numerical analysis. Getting the PhD is very temping, but the main thing holding me back is that I don't know how...
Unless we figure out time travel (laughable), there is no way to come to a scientific explanation of the universe. All the 'theories' we have on the universe's beginnings are nothing but hypotheses...and that includes the big bang 'theory'...which is currently being shot to **** (Back and to the...
