A year is the orbital period of a planetary body, for example, the Earth, moving in its orbit around the Sun. Due to the Earth's axial tilt, the course of a year sees the passing of the seasons, marked by change in weather, the hours of daylight, and, consequently, vegetation and soil fertility. In temperate and subpolar regions around the planet, four seasons are generally recognized: spring, summer, autumn and winter. In tropical and subtropical regions, several geographical sectors do not present defined seasons; but in the seasonal tropics, the annual wet and dry seasons are recognized and tracked.
A calendar year is an approximation of the number of days of the Earth's orbital period, as counted in a given calendar. The Gregorian calendar, or modern calendar, presents its calendar year to be either a common year of 365 days or a leap year of 366 days, as do the Julian calendars; see below. For the Gregorian calendar, the average length of the calendar year (the mean year) across the complete leap cycle of 400 years is 365.2425 days. The ISO standard ISO 80000-3, Annex C, supports the symbol a (for Latin annus) to represent a year of either 365 or 366 days. In English, the abbreviations y and yr are commonly used.
In astronomy, the Julian year is a unit of time; it is defined as 365.25 days of exactly 86,400 seconds (SI base unit), totalling exactly 31,557,600 seconds in the Julian astronomical year. The word year is also used for periods loosely associated with, but not identical to, the calendar or astronomical year, such as the seasonal year, the fiscal year, the academic year, etc. Similarly, year can mean the orbital period of any planet; for example, a Martian year and a Venusian year are examples of the time a planet takes to transit one complete orbit. The term can also be used in reference to any long period or cycle, such as the Great Year.
I'm a 1st year graduate student, and until yesterday I was absolutely certain I wanted to do theoretical physics. After talking to the 1st year graduate advisor, I am not not so sure. While he didn't say anything I didn't know (3 postdocs minimum, few academic jobs, less industry jobs than...
So in the first 2 or 3 semesters of intro physics i know you're grinding into the system of thinking in terms of physics and learning how to approach a problem - to that end you do hundreds of thought provoking examples to hone your skills so that you don't just plug and chug but actually learn...

Hi, I am currently studying Mechanical Engineering and I am in the first year. Can you guys suggest me any good books for thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. I am ready to buy more than just one book. I atleast want a book that can provide me with some basics(Easy learning) just to give me an...
So, my friends and I build ice forts each year (well, not last year... not enough snow). Each year they get a little more ambitious as we apply our previously learned trade-skills to the next generation. I thought I would share a bit here; we just started work on the third generation over this...
I'm an undergraduate civil engineering student in my first year and I've passed all courses in my first semester with average grades except one kind of introduction course.
Now I have 2 math courses and 2 physics courses this term. What I'm thinking is that having average or barely passing...
Hello;
I am a student in Year 11 (second year of GCSE). I am looking for ways to 'enhance' or add more to my CV/resumé and I have chosen to try and do some volunteer work, in the hopes of making myself try to stand out and possibly increase my changes of getting into university.
I already...

Hi all. Probability definitely isn't my specialty, and I've run across this problem at work.
There's one gate valve that isolates two 2400 psi hydrogen gas banks from each other, and I'm trying to find the probability that it fails in one year. I've done some digging and found failure rates...
Dear forum members,
My 10 year old son intuitively figured out the concept of frames of reference. After a series of questions regarding walking down the aisle of an aircraft at x mph and how that would appear to a fellow passenger versus someone on the ground, he startled me by asking whether...
I'm a 2nd year physics major, with a minor in math, i have a GPA around 3, (4 point system), and i will probably graduate by next year, i was wondering what grad schools i would have a shot at?

Hi guys
So I've just started my first year at UBC studying engineering. I plan to major in electrical in second year but I have messed up my average quite a bit so far.
I have miserably failed my elective (psychology 35% ... it's really not my thing, I regret so much for not dropping it). I...
I know this has been on here alot, but I'm another of those that will be going back to college to get my physics degree. I'm 36, spent time in the intelligence field and infosec (meh), and realized that my first and only love was always space and physics. I did a year and a half of physics when...
Hi. Is there any advice you can give as to how to go about this. Things I need to make sure I do, what not to do, writing style etc etc. Should I follow the exact outline of a reputable paper I have acess to ?
If your interested I have to make a phantom with simillar charcteristics to breast...

One of our college's physics seniors scored poorly on the physics subject GRE and is looking for something to do for a year while s/he studies for, and retakes this test. Our student would like to find an appropriate position at a lab (academic, industrial, government...) which provides enough...
I plan on taking an economics course through my local community college and working at a 4-H camp. I kind of want to have at least one more summer just chilling at home before I do any internships, since I'd have to live at least an hour and a half away from home. I'm a chemE major in a state...
Title should be 3rd year: sorry.
Intro
I really love physics, and even that math involved. 1st year I got first in my year, and did really well in 2nd year also.
Lately however I have been feeling as if I don't know enough and feel like I am not good enough. In a lot of the lectures I can't...

Hi PF members.
I'm a first year engineering student, and recently got my midterms back and was highly disappointed with the statics mark, 55% compared to the class average of 23.8/40, SD 9.1.
I did a very large amount of practice from Hibbeler's Statics textbook, 12e, but it seemed that the...

Hi,
I haven't done physics since year 10, and will be doing physics next year at college, it is involving the concepts i will list below, with a emphasis on the physics of the human body with them, so if it involves this it'll be great.
I want a book that has fairly simple explanations, is...
