A year is the orbital period of a planetary body, for example, the Earth, moving in its orbit around the Sun. Due to the Earth's axial tilt, the course of a year sees the passing of the seasons, marked by change in weather, the hours of daylight, and, consequently, vegetation and soil fertility. In temperate and subpolar regions around the planet, four seasons are generally recognized: spring, summer, autumn and winter. In tropical and subtropical regions, several geographical sectors do not present defined seasons; but in the seasonal tropics, the annual wet and dry seasons are recognized and tracked.
A calendar year is an approximation of the number of days of the Earth's orbital period, as counted in a given calendar. The Gregorian calendar, or modern calendar, presents its calendar year to be either a common year of 365 days or a leap year of 366 days, as do the Julian calendars; see below. For the Gregorian calendar, the average length of the calendar year (the mean year) across the complete leap cycle of 400 years is 365.2425 days. The ISO standard ISO 80000-3, Annex C, supports the symbol a (for Latin annus) to represent a year of either 365 or 366 days. In English, the abbreviations y and yr are commonly used.
In astronomy, the Julian year is a unit of time; it is defined as 365.25 days of exactly 86,400 seconds (SI base unit), totalling exactly 31,557,600 seconds in the Julian astronomical year. The word year is also used for periods loosely associated with, but not identical to, the calendar or astronomical year, such as the seasonal year, the fiscal year, the academic year, etc. Similarly, year can mean the orbital period of any planet; for example, a Martian year and a Venusian year are examples of the time a planet takes to transit one complete orbit. The term can also be used in reference to any long period or cycle, such as the Great Year.
Hey guys, here's what's happening. I am currently failing my 1 year program which will get me into university. I am interested in studying one of the hard sciences (physics or math). In this program we have 2 semesters. We are done the first half of the first semester. Here are my marks...
I am in my Second year of physics right now and I am just curious what the major changes from the first 2 years of math and physics take place in the third and fourth years. What should I expect? How can I prepare for these years and do well?
Hello. I am studying differential calculus and I need help on what these questions are asking and how to solve them. I have attempted some of the question but I need clarification. This week is mainly focused on learning the Quotient Rule. Please help me

Im a senior, I took AP Chemistry last year, and I am in AP Calculus, AP Biology, and AP Physics. I excel at chemistry (on the high school level) and I have always had a passion for it, specially organic chemistry, but now that I am in Calculus and Physics, I have reallllyyyy come to love them...
Heya,
I've been asking around at job fairs, along with classmates/faculty, and the consensus seems to be that lots of people want physics majors who know about programming, handling data, and modeling.
The problem is.. I don't know much about those subjects. What's the best way to fix...
hello friends, i am an indian student with a 3 year BSc in physics interested in pursuing research in theoretical physics. I want to do masters from abroad. What are the countries/universities which recognise a three year bachelors degree? please guide...

Galactic Modelling - Bulge formation
The bulges at the centres of galaxies often host supermassive black holes (SMBHs), with masses as large as 10^9 M sun. The masses of SMBHs correlate with properties of bulges. Therefore it is important to understand how bulges form in order to understand...
Hi everyone!
So I'm about to enter my 4th year in an honors physics program (in Canada if that matters) and my biggest concern is that I don't know what to do with my life after, what field to get into, etc.. things like that. and honestly I'm not even sure if I like physics anymore :(! I do...
I'm attending a college in the top 10 in math/physics. I did really well in HS, scored in the 99th percentile, etc. That whole time I guess I'd be considered depressed. I was lazy and slept through all my classes. Never turned in work. I was unmotivated. This started in late elementary school...
Greetings, fellow scientists. I've come here due to extreme desperation over a simple fact that causes me a lot of stress: having to choose a specialty for my next year. But first, a bit of elaboration over that. Oh, and the question is going to be long, but I need the help, so if you are...
The title pretty much explains it, but I am going into my sophomore (10th grade) year and I really want to improve my grades. What are some of the best ways to prepare myself?
Hi,
I am just about to go into my 3rd year of my Mechanical Engineering Degree and have decided to do a project with the following description:
"Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) is a non-intrusive technique used to
measure flow velocities and turbulence quantities in a fluid flow. The...
Hey everyone. This is something I've been wondering about lately. I'm currently in a community college, with plans to transfer to a university, and eventually go on for my doctorate(I'm majoring in physics). How unusual would it be to spend an extra year as an undergrad to take more upper...
I was wondering which specific physics courses I should take while still in undergrad if I'm interested in experimental plasma physics (and might study it in grad school).
I've taken all the intro courses for the major branches (electro theory, mechanics, QM, optics, thermal physics...
In the late 80’s and early 90’s there was the idea of ‘calculus reform’ and some emphasis and syllabus changed. The order of doing things in calculus also changed with the advantage of technology.
Similarly in linear algebra there was a linear algebra curriculum study group which produced some...

It has been 50 years since I was taught or introduced to QM at the end of my EE degree. This article gives the best understandable history describing QM I can remember. It is written for someone informed in...
Hello,
As stated in the title, I've just completed a first year in physics and am interested in working in the field of laser science. Bear with me, as my questions may sound naive. Ideally, I would like to hear from those currently in the field, but any advice is welcome.
1.) Did you begin...
This is my first post but I've lurked for awhile. I just finished a two-year AA degree at my local community college in physics. I'm transferring to a university in the fall and recently went to speak with the academic adviser there.
A little background about my situation before I continue...
still one school year left , I think it will be "applied physics"
Well anyone would normally pursue an engineering career in my school , especially in the "General sciences" section . I first considered doing Astrophysics , but having seen how incompatible it is with what I thought it would be...
So I've got myself set up for a pretty daunting first year. My courses:
Calc I
Phys Calc I
Gen Chem I
CPSC Programming Engineers
CPSC Engineering Graphics
English I (Actually very hard)
Now I think I'd be able to pull off a decent/good GPA if I sacrifice my life completely...but I...
hey guys! i want to work on archemedian screw/its applications as my final year engineering project. can u help me to make it more engineering affiliated ? i got this idea from a site related to school level science project...i really want to do this. please suggest ideas! thanks in advance.
Hello guys, I really need your help. I have a homework in physics, i know this questions is easy for others but i don't know how to solve this, i tried googling:(
So here's the question: ( i need solutions too)
1. If Earth's quadrant is 10 000 000m, what is the circumference of earth?

I'm going to be a sophomore next year. I'm taking Honors Geometry with many other honors classes. I need help to expand my math skills. I've never been great in math. I'm okay in math, so it takes lots of studying for me to get the grade I got. Is there anything I could do to get better in math...
Hi,
I'm an undergraduate double-major, Physics and English literature, going into my senior year. I chose/declared both of my majors during sophomore year, having entered school with a vague intention of majoring in linguistics (which soon dissipated). As such, I'm about a 'year behind' in...
Any good GRE tips? As in general GRE and not pgre. I'm planning on spending sometime preparing for it since my writing sucks. I want to buy one or two books on general GRE, can someone do a review of the popular gre books? I see mixed review for every book.
Next fall I will be taking EM, Mechanics, Quantum mechanics and a 2000 level mechanics lab that is its own course. I will also be doing research for credit, however the professor is very lenient on when we meet and how much work is done. My concern is one, that i think my EM knowledge is...
Hi everyone,
I've always liked both Physics and Chemistry equally, but recently I've had to choose between either Physics or Chemistry as a course in some extension program I got into.
At my age (16), which would be a better option for the future? I'm a mathematical person, so at the moment...
Hi everyone,
quick and hopefully simple question,
I was wondering is it a bad/good idea to take one or two courses in the summer to have a slightly reduced courseload during the school year?
And how does this affect chances of graduate school and scholarships etc?
Thank you!
Good afternoon. I have thus far taken for my math major: Linear Algebra (with proofs), Complex Analysis for Applications, Linear/Nonlinear systems of ODE, Applied Combinatorics, and Foundations of Geometry. Next year will be my 3rd year of study. However, I've yet to complete the year long...
Greetings Physicists,
I've been accepted to study at my state University for my Ph.D in Physics.
I reticent to accept however for two reasons;
1. They are not offering me a TA'ship immediately. This means I would have to finance at least my first year with student loans and work study...
Hi guys, I need sincere opinions on possible specializations for my last undergrad year.
I'll keep this short. My situation is very different from what an undergrad US student or European student may have. The degree where I live lasts 5 years and corresponds to roughly a master degree for the...
I'm going to be dropping a course and I'm only going to take 4 courses per semester. 5 courses is too much for me. I can do it, but it's very stressful.
Semester 1: 5 courses
Semester 2: 4 courses (going to drop a course tomorrow)
Semester 3: 4 courses
Semester 4: 4 courses
Semester 5: 4...
Hey guys, so I'm a junior right now, and my path towards going to grad school in math has been going steadily, I guess. I'll have a couple of good classes under my belt by the time I graduate (though most of the upper level math classes will be taken next year), and an REU for this coming...
Hey all, so I'm kind of confused about what to do in terms of school to actually land a job on the outside doing what I'm interested in doing. I'm currently a plain ole physics b.s. hopeful, no specializations attached. My plan since going back to school has always been to get a phd in physics...
Hey everyone,
This semester I felt like I would be overwhelmed with my courses so I ended up taking a "bird" course as one of the five courses... but ironically it is currently my lowest mark.
I am debating dropping it (last day to drop without penalty is in 2 days) but before I do that I...
Prove by mathematical induction:
(2n)! < (2^(2n))*(n!)^2 , for all n=2,3,4...
I know that to start you must prove that it is true for n=2,
(2*2)! = 24 < 64 = (2^4)(2!)^2
Then you assume that n=k and show tha n=k implies that n=(k+1)
(2k)! < (2^(2k))*(k!)^2
... At this point I...
Hi,
I've done a search and I know that other people have askled for a good textbook for fluid mechanics for a 1st year Mech Eng student however, I'd like to find one with a lot of worked example ploblems.
I'm finding my course notes are too far a jump from the simple examples our lecturer...
Good morning everyone. So I've been thinking quite a bit about it and recently switched from applied math to pure math, and I wish to attend grad school, if not PhD then at least a master's with thesis. I'm in the middle of my 2nd year, so next Fall I plan on taking Analysis, and then the fall...
I'm in my first year of university and will be taking a math, physics and an Earth science course. I'm not sure which subject to choose for my 4th subject however, at the moment I'm thinking either a second language (French or German) or chemistry.
Would first year chemistry be useful for a...
Hi, I am a high school sophomore and am thinking about what courses I need to register for my junior year.
My advisor suggests that I take AP chemistry in junior year and AP physics in senior year. I wonder if I follow this suggestion, I won't have enough knowledge when I take the ACT test in...
I met with a REALLY nice professor who is doing theoretical nuclear and particle physics (one of my interests). I am in my first year, but can graduate in three years instead of four because of AP credit (with already having taken AP Physics with Calculus and am currently taking Quantum). So he...
