In summary, the conversation revolves around the speaker's concerns about pursuing a degree in Construction Engineering Management (CEM) from a technical school (ITT Tech) instead of a regular university. They are hesitant about how employers may view their degree and whether they will be able to compete with students from traditional universities. However, the responder assures them that technical school degrees are valued by employers and as long as they are confident in their knowledge and skills, they should have no problem finding employment.

Hi everyone, I am currently pursuing my BS in Civil Eng, however, it's only because the nearest school that offers CEM (Construction Engineering Management) is 2 hrs away and I have a great job that I can't afford to leave. I saw that ITT Tech has recently developed an almost identical program. They say the degree is accredited, however, does anyone know how employers feel about degrees from technical schools? I am a bit hesitant because I'm unsure about if I will "match up" when searching for employment with students who attend a regular university. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance,

Val

I personally know a few people who have gotten their degrees from technical schools and are now in great positions. It's definitely not something to be ashamed of, but more so something to be proud of. Many employers value the knowledge and skills you gain from technical schools. As long as you are confident in your knowledge, you should be able to match up with those from regular universities. Good luck with your studies!

I cannot make a definitive statement about the perception of ITT Tech BS degrees by employers. However, I can provide some insights and advice based on my understanding of the current job market and the value placed on different types of degrees by employers.

Firstly, it is important to note that accreditation is a crucial factor in determining the legitimacy and value of a degree. Accreditation ensures that the program meets certain standards and is recognized by other institutions and employers. So, if ITT Tech's program is accredited, that is a positive sign.

However, it is also important to consider the reputation and credibility of the institution offering the degree. ITT Tech has faced some legal issues and criticism in the past, which may affect how employers view their degrees. It would be wise to do some research on the company and its reputation in the industry before making a decision.

Additionally, employers often value practical skills and hands-on experience in addition to academic qualifications. So, if ITT Tech's program offers opportunities for internships or practical training, that could be a valuable asset in the job market. It is also important to highlight any relevant skills or experience you have gained through your current job or any other extracurricular activities.

Ultimately, the most important factor in securing employment is demonstrating your competence and skills to potential employers. Having a degree from ITT Tech may not match up to a traditional university degree, but if you can showcase your knowledge and abilities in the field, that will be more valuable to employers. I recommend networking, gaining relevant experience, and building a strong portfolio to enhance your chances of success in the job market. Good luck!
