A grade point is about the number of hours per week that a class meets for instruction during an 18 week semester. An assessment mark of 4, 3, 2, 1, 0 correspond to letter grades of A, B, C, D, F. Grade Point Average is the (trouble expressing this properly) assessment mark for each hour divided by the total number of grade points.

An example will clarify what I mean.
NameOfCourse01 is 3 units; NameOfCourse02 is 5 units.
You earn C for Course01, and earn A for Course02. Total units is 3+5=8.
Grades earned gave you 3*3 + 5*4 = 9 + 20 = 29,
so for this semester, GPA is 29/8 (do the arithmetic, get 3 point something...)

What I should have said is grade points are the letter grade as a value multiplied by the number of units; so in my example above, 29 grade points.

FAQ: Credit Hour System: Answers to GPA, SGPA, CGPA & Quality Point Questions

What is a credit hour system?

A credit hour system is a way to measure academic progress and workload in higher education. It assigns a certain number of credit hours to each course, based on the amount of time and effort required to complete it. These credit hours are used to calculate a student's GPA (grade point average) and determine their progress towards graduation.

How is my GPA calculated?

GPA stands for grade point average, and it is calculated by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the total number of credit hours attempted. Each letter grade (A, B, C, D, F) is assigned a certain number of grade points, typically on a scale from 0 to 4. For example, an A may be worth 4 points, a B worth 3 points, and so on. The GPA is an overall measure of a student's academic performance.

What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?

SGPA stands for semester grade point average, and it is calculated based on the grades earned in a particular semester or term. CGPA stands for cumulative grade point average, and it takes into account all the grades earned by a student throughout their academic career. CGPA is a more comprehensive measure of a student's overall academic performance.

What is a quality point?

A quality point is a numerical value assigned to a letter grade, used to calculate a student's GPA. For example, an A may be worth 4 quality points, a B worth 3 points, and so on. The total number of quality points earned is divided by the total number of credit hours attempted to determine the GPA.

How does the credit hour system affect my degree?

The credit hour system is used to track a student's progress towards graduation. Each degree program has a certain number of credit hours required for completion, and students must earn a certain GPA to graduate. Courses that do not fulfill degree requirements or are failed may delay graduation or require students to retake the course to earn the necessary credit hours and GPA.
