How Do You Calculate E-Field and B-Field of a 10W Laser?

In summary, to calculate the average E-Field and B-field produced by a laser with power 10W and radius 1mm, you can use the formula for power density and the relationship between intensity and E and B fields. This will allow you to determine the intensity of the beam, which is an intermediate step in the calculation. Then, you can use the formula for power density to find the B-field and rearrange it to find the E-field.

1.Calculate the average E-Field and B-field produced by a laser with power 10W and radius 1mm
2.Not sure where to start with this one. Use equations of Flux perhaps?
3. So given the modest amount of infomation and the fact the question represents 1 mark, i assume the calculation is straight forward. I just don't know how to approach the question. Any help to get me started would be greatly appreciated.

Do you know what is the physical quantity intensity and how it is related to the E and B fields of an electromagnetic wave?

  • #3
With regards to intensity:

Power = [tex]\int[/tex] Intensity dA

|Intensity| = Power / [tex]\pi[/tex] r[tex]^{2}[/tex] : As per Area of beam.

Not sure how to relate to the Electric and Magnetic Fields.

This just means you are able to calculate the intensity of the beam, given the data from the problem. It is an intermediate result. You need to use a specific formula that relates the intensity of an electromagnetic wave to the intensity of E and B in order to proceed further.

okay, i think i have the solution now,

find power density, (power/surface area),

Also Power Density = Mag of poynting Vector

That is 'Power Density = [tex]\frac{E^{2}}{c\mu_{0}}[/tex]

Re-arranging for <E> for E-field.

To find B-Field, use <B> = (1/c)<E>

FAQ: How Do You Calculate E-Field and B-Field of a 10W Laser?

What is the E-field and B-field of a 10W laser?

The E-field and B-field of a 10W laser refer to the electric and magnetic fields that are produced by the laser's electromagnetic radiation.

How are the E-field and B-field related in a 10W laser?

In a 10W laser, the E-field and B-field are perpendicular to each other and oscillate at right angles to the direction of propagation of the laser beam. This relationship is known as transverse electromagnetic (TEM) mode.

How do the E-field and B-field affect the intensity of a 10W laser?

The intensity of a 10W laser is directly related to the strength of its E-field and B-field. The higher the intensity of the electric and magnetic fields, the more powerful the laser beam will be.

What factors can affect the E-field and B-field of a 10W laser?

The E-field and B-field of a 10W laser can be affected by the laser's power source, the materials used to create the laser, and the environment in which the laser is operating. Changes in any of these factors can alter the strength and direction of the fields.

How are the E-field and B-field measured in a 10W laser?

The E-field and B-field in a 10W laser can be measured using specialized instruments such as electric field probes and magnetic field sensors. These instruments can detect and quantify the strength and direction of the fields at specific points in the laser's beam path.
