I was a member of the Society for Information Display for a long time. Most new display advances are published in their journals and proceedings:

Check out your local university/technical library for SID publications.

The Nixie tube was a tried and true decade display counter tube in the mid 1960's. Prior to that, the Decatron tube was widely used. I also saw 10-milliamp analog (current summing) meters used as decade output displays for 1-2-4-8 BCD counter decade counters driven by vacuum-tube (VT) set-reset (SR) flip flops. Unlike more modern decade displays, the Decatron tube was mesmerizing. See
