In summary: Generally speaking that server your VPN connects to can be configured to allow access to whatever it wants you to, be it a single web server, a company network, or the entire internet. If you like it can work like a firewall.

Am told there's a VPN that only gives access to certain websites. So it's not one enabling you to surf the internet as if you were in a virtual place, accessing all websites that are 'local' to that virtual place. Is there such a VPN?

Just out of curiosity, why would you WANT such a limited capability?

Couldn't someone want a capability to limit (e.g. to restrict his kids (not that realistically that's practicable)), as distinguished from a limited capability?

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network, it allow you to connect to a network over a network connection. It was traditionally used to provide access to a specific network only, for example to allow people to work remotely while still accessing the office computers/servers while dialled in via a modem.. The fact the internet came along afterwards is just coincidense and the you could also grant access to the internet if you wished.

FAQ: Is There a VPN that Only Allows Access to Certain Websites?

1. What is a VPN?

A VPN, or virtual private network, is a secure network connection that allows users to access the internet from a remote location. It encrypts your internet traffic and routes it through a server in a different location, making it seem like you are accessing the internet from that location.

2. How does a VPN work?

A VPN works by creating a secure and encrypted tunnel between your device and a remote server. When you access the internet through a VPN, all of your data is encrypted and sent through this tunnel, making it difficult for anyone to intercept or access your information.

3. Can a VPN only allow access to certain websites?

Yes, a VPN can be configured to only allow access to certain websites. This can be done by setting up a whitelist of approved websites and blocking all others, or by using a split tunneling feature that allows you to choose which websites or applications go through the VPN and which ones do not.

4. How can a VPN benefit me if it only allows access to certain websites?

A VPN that only allows access to certain websites can provide an extra layer of security for those specific websites. It can also be useful for businesses that want to restrict access to certain websites for their employees, or for individuals who want to limit their internet usage to specific sites for productivity or privacy reasons.

5. Are there any downsides to using a VPN that only allows access to certain websites?

One potential downside is that it may limit your online experience, as you will only have access to a restricted list of websites. Additionally, this type of VPN may require more configuration and maintenance, as you will need to constantly update the whitelist of approved websites. It may also be more expensive, as you may need to pay for a custom VPN setup or a subscription for a VPN service that offers this feature.
