Will Injecting O2 into an Equilibrium System make More Materials Radioactive?

In summary, we discussed two equilibrium systems, one being endothermic and the other involving a radioactive substance being injected. In the first system, injecting Ne gas will not affect the equilibrium, but injecting hydrogen gas will result in increased production of HI. In the second system, only substances containing radioactive nuclei will become radioactive, so injecting O2 gas will make only the injected O2 gas radioactive, while substances like O2 and NO2 will not be affected unless they contain radioactive nuclei.

be A Equilibrium System (the reaction is Endothermic).

if Will inject into the System Ne(g) How will this affect the balance in the System ?

i will get more2HI Because Le Chatelier's principle?, For example if i will inject into the System more Hydrogen gas i will get more 2HI. but about Ne i am not sure.

2) be B Equilibrium System if i will inject into the System O2(g) Radioactive.

Which of the materials in the System will be also a Radioactive after a while?

i just know that after a while more Materials In the System will also be a Radioactive.

hope you can help me.

thanks

well i know in A that Ne is a Inert gas so it will not Affect on the reaction .

  • #3
Ne will not has affect on the equilibruim in system A
O2 and NO2 for sure will be radioactive but iam not sure about N2 for system B

What is a "source" of radioactivity in the atom?

"What is a "source" of radioactivity in the atom?"

I don't really know what you mean.

what abc007 told i know too but i want to know if N2 also will be radioactivity ?

thanks to both of you.

well i also know that Radioactive decay involves the emission of different types of particles and energy, resulting in appointing the atomic nucleus becomes the nucleus of another element.

i am not sure if is helping to Solve the question.

You are getting close. Atoms are made of nucleus and electrons. Which of these is responsible for radioactivity?

  • #8
the nucleus are responsible for radioactivity. nucleus loses energy by emitting radiation in the form of particles or electromagnetic waves.

but how is helping to know Which of the materials in the System will be also a Radioactive after a while?
well Radioactive have Environmental impacts so all the materials who Came into contact with the Radioactive material will be also Radioactive after a while?

thanks.

There are two ways in which radioactivity can be transferred from a substance to substance. One is contamination - but we are already talking about mixture, so if anything we will measure the radioactivity after separation and if it is just a contamination radioactivity level will be very small. Or - at least in theory - if separation was perfect, there will be no traces of radioactivity.

It may also happen that decay products induce radioactivity in irradiated substance. That's more serious problem and to be sure that's not interfering with our case we should consult tables of known nuclear reactions. But I guess you are expected to assume nothing like that happens. In fact even if something like that happens, level of the radioactivity of irradiated substance would be several orders of magnitude smaller.

so None of the substance here will be radioactivity ?
Or contamination radioactivity level will be very small?thanks.

  • #11
what i mean is someone of the substance in this system must be affect from the radioactivity.

  • #12
Let's try from another direction... Only substances containing radioactive element will be radioactive.

  • #13
Ok i think i Understand, but i want make it clear.

so in this system if i will inject into the System O2(g) Radioactive. so only the O2(g) Radioactive that i inject will be Radioactive or also the the other o2 and NO2 will be also Radioactive Because they contain O2?

thanks so much.

Every substance containing radioactive nuclei will be radioactive. The only substance that doesn't contain radioactive nuclei would be N2.

ok now i 100% Understand or 99% thank you.

FAQ: Will Injecting O2 into an Equilibrium System make More Materials Radioactive?

What is a chemical reaction?

A chemical reaction is a process in which one or more substances, called reactants, are transformed into one or more different substances, called products. This transformation occurs due to the breaking and forming of chemical bonds between atoms.

What are the main types of chemical reactions?

There are five main types of chemical reactions: synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, and combustion. In a synthesis reaction, two or more substances combine to form a new compound. In a decomposition reaction, a compound breaks down into two or more simpler substances. In a single replacement reaction, one element replaces another element in a compound. In a double replacement reaction, the cations and anions of two different compounds switch places. In a combustion reaction, a compound reacts with oxygen to produce water and carbon dioxide.
