What is Phenomena: Definition and 166 Discussions

A phenomenon (Greek: φαινόμενον, romanized: phainómenon, lit. 'thing appearing to view'; plural phenomena) is an observable fact or event. The term came into its modern philosophical usage through Immanuel Kant, who contrasted it with the noumenon, which cannot be directly observed. Kant was heavily influenced by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz in this part of his philosophy, in which phenomenon and noumenon serve as interrelated technical terms. Far predating this, the ancient Greek Pyrrhonist philosopher Sextus Empiricus also used phenomenon and noumenon as interrelated technical terms.

    Struggling to Understand Relativistic Phenomena

This question has been driving me crazy all night. The question reads: If the speed of light were smaller than it is, would relativistic phenomena be more or less conspicious than they are now? Honestly, i do not have a clue as to what the question is asking, and without...

Video Recommendations for Black Holes & other space-related phenomena

I am currently a student-teacher pursuing my teaching certificate for high school physics. Over the past month or so, my students have been asking a lot about black holes. Since they are showing such an interest in space, I thought it might be a good idea to find a video to show them to...

    Clustering Phenomena In Nuclear Systems

I would like to start a thread on this topic--clustering phenomena in nuclear systems. I wish to learn the status of current research in this area. Let me start with a few historical perspectives, from journals well respected--cited below. What we find is a now 65 + year unbroken evidence of...

    Exploring Tunneling to Wave Phenomena

Hi! I always thought that tunneling was a quantum phenomenum. So another day I found a problem which is about the part of the light that can be transmitted (refracted) even if you send I light beam in an angle greater then the limit angle of two material boundary. By the way looking at a...

    Is consciousness a material phenomena?

Or does it exist outside the physical universe? This is a little old, but it seems there’s a lot of confusion surrounding this topic. Not only that but it seems consciousness has only been brought back into science since quantum mechanics was introduced. Wasn’t sure where to post this so...
