easier way: 1/3 = 0.333... (three dots being key)
multiply by three to get
1 = 0.999...
that thread is closed but this is my two cents.
it's not that surprising, really, that every rational number (1 in this case) can be represented by a series (9/10 + 9/100 + 9/1000 + ...) because even fractions like 1/3 can be (3/10 + 3/100 + 3/1000 +...).
