A bachelor's degree (from Middle Latin baccalaureus) or baccalaureate (from Modern Latin baccalaureatus) is an undergraduate academic degree awarded by colleges and universities upon completion of a course of study lasting three to six years (depending on institution and academic discipline). The two most common bachelor's degrees are the Bachelor of Arts (BA) and the Bachelor of Science (BS or BSc). In some institutions and educational systems, some bachelor's degrees can only be taken as graduate or postgraduate educations after a first degree has been completed, although more commonly the successful completion of a bachelor's degree is a prerequisite for further courses such as a master's or a doctorate.
In countries with qualifications frameworks, bachelor's degrees are normally one of the major levels in the framework (sometimes two levels where non-honours and honours bachelor's degrees are considered separately), although some qualifications titled bachelor's degrees may be at other levels (e.g., MBBS) and some qualifications with non-bachelor's titles may be classified as bachelor's degrees (e.g. the Scottish MA and Canadian MD).
The term bachelor in the 12th century referred to a knight bachelor, who was too young or poor to gather vassals under his own banner. By the end of the 13th century, it was also used by junior members of guilds or universities. By folk etymology or wordplay, the word baccalaureus came to be associated with bacca lauri ("laurel berry") in reference to laurels being awarded for academic success or honours.Under the British system, and those influenced by it, undergraduate academic degrees are differentiated between honours degrees (sometimes denoted by the addition of "(Hons)" after the degree abbreviation) and non-honours degrees (known variously as pass degrees, ordinary degrees or general degrees). An honours degree generally requires a higher academic standard than a pass degree, and in some systems an additional year of study beyond the non-honours bachelor's. Some countries, such as Australia, New Zealand and Canada, have a postgraduate "bachelor with honours" degree. This may be taken as a consecutive academic degree, continuing on from the completion of a bachelor's degree program in the same field, or as part of an integrated honours program. Programs like these typically require completion of a full-year long research thesis project.
Hi, I'm a computer science student (2nd year). and I LOVE physics and hope to get a bachelor degree in it. because It's very hard to be a physics and computer science student at the same time, I decided to study physics when I'm not busy in studying computer science. So, is there any institute...
Simply put - which one would you choose and why? I have a physics spot in the University of Tartu, i'll probably acquire a spot for technical physics in the near future in the Tallinn's University of Technology.
The way i see it, technical physics is all about application, but I'm worried...
If someone were to already have a bachelors degree, and then wanted to pursue a second bachelors degree, how much credit of the first bachelors degree would count towards a second?
The reason I ask is because a bachelors degree includes a lot of general eds and common prerequisites that...
In another thread I found someone mention this program at Boston U (http://www.bu.edu/eng/academics/special-programs/leap/) for students with bachelors in non-engineering fields, like liberal arts + humanities, that can do the makeup coursework and then attain a masters in engineering.
I'm...
Okay, so right now I'm scheduled to go to University for Aerospace Engineering but I'm having second thoughts. I got into it b/c I love math and physics and I thought that since I also love everything space related this would be the perfect program for me.
Now I'm thinking that I should go...
I'm a final year student at a school in India. I'll be taking up Mathematics as my Undergraduate subject(I'm interested in Pure Mathematics, especially number theory and geometry mainly thanks to Hardy's "An Introduction to the theory of numbers" and Courant's "What is Mathematics?")...
This spring I'll be graduating with a BA in English and German. I'll potentially be traveling to Germany next year to teach on a Fulbright grant, and I might possibly do the Teach for America program for two years. However, either immediately after I graduate, or after one of those programs...
Hello everyone.
I would assume such a thread would be very common in this section but I believe my circumstances are specific so I will make a new one.
I'm a student in Slovenia, Central Europe. I'm finishing a bachelor's degree in physics. My particular area of study were astronomy and...
Hey Guys!
After suffering something of a quarter life crisis in my senior year in undergrad physics, I decided not to apply for my Ph.d. Instead, I decided I'd like to work professionally as a software engineer. Problem is, I have little formal education in computer science (I took a class in...
Hi
So I am currently in Grade 12 and I will be starting to apply for unversities soon. I am planning to apply for BSc in math but I just wanted to open graduate school option in engineering (especially in mechanical engineering). Is it possible to go master's program in mechanical engineering...
Do the employers care about the bachelor? For example if two persons, one with applied mathematics bachelor's and other with physics bachelor's, both have the same master's, can they get the same jobs?
I'm asking this because people with bachelor's in applied mathematics usually get hired for...
Dear friends,
I am here to give you a snapshot of my status, and ask for some guidance. I am about to finish my bachelors in EE from University of Toronto. I have a really bad university track record. I failed first year, then went on vacation for another year out of frustration, came back...
Posting this for my niece:
She's confined to a nursing home but very talented in statistics and math. She'd like to get an online bachelor's degree from a good university. Do you have any suggestions for her?
Pursuing 2nd bachelor's degree--need advice
I am 25 years old and graduated with a BA in a liberal arts field in 2008. I have had a string of unsuccessful temp jobs, and am trying to go back to school to get a new degree. I am looking for job stability and a decent salary.
Since graduating...
Philosophy+Mathematics or Physics will definately bring a synergistic effect, however,
how about mechanical engineering and philosophy?
has anyone taken this combination?
What degree would provide me more job offers and have more potential? A second bachelor's in electrical engineering (I have a bachelor's in pure mathematics) or a masters in applied physics (where I would have to take a few undergraduate physics classes in order to get me up to speed)?
Thanks!
it is possible to do a masters degree in us in astronomy or astrophysics with a mechanical undergrad?

Hello all,
This is my first thread in this forum, and I would like to ask some questions about Master's degree in physics.
My Bachelor degree was in Management Information System (Which I didn't achieve in USA), and I would like to apply for Master's degree in Physics in USA.
All I need to...
What should I get my bachelor's degree in if I want to major in physics? I plan to get my masters degree in physics, and probably a phd in physics after that. Should I major in math or physics? Or something else?
(On a side note, how much money do physicists employed by the government make...
Is it possible in any USA universities to complete a bachelor degree in only 2 years by passing all the examinations required for graduation with attending laboratory classes only for some one who have actually Self studied physics before and is very good in it?
Hi all,
So I graduated from a small liberal arts school in Minnesota with my B.A. in Biology last year (2009). I'm not really sure why, but I decided on Plant Pathology for graduate school, which landed me in a PhD program at NDSU in Fargo, ND.
Now, what I really wanted to do was live in...
I received an email this afternoon from my advisor explaining I have the potential to earn an associate’s degree while pursuing my bachelor’s degree. Currently, I’m majoring in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematical Sciences; however, the possibility of earning an associate’s with no...
I am a 2nd year university student. I want to go into dentistry after I get my bachelor but I am not sure which degrees would be the best for it.
I am thinking of mechanical engineering because material(silicons and metals) background is useful. Also, part of dentistry to make client's teeth...
If i do my bachelors in Aeronautics from China(nanjing university of aeronautics and astronautics). Will it be recognised in the US, if i plan to do my masters later on from the US?
* This university's grading system is different from that of the US, no CGPA. It has some other scoring...
I'm in the U.S. and i was wondering if you have to take the general ed classes before the classes that relate to you degree. like the general ed classes could be English 1A, some history classes, etc.. just those. I thought that after you graduate high school you can immediately start working on...

With regards to the electrical engineering field, do you believe it is possible to maybe find some work before graduating, (i.e. before you have a full bachelors degree,) So that you can practice what you've been taught in college, in order to retain the skills, and to get experience also ...
So actually the question is not whether to get a bachelor's degree vs. associates, but the question phrased more correctly, is :
Would it be better to apply for an associates degree while working on a bachelor's degree, or just work on a bachelor's degree and not bother to apply for the...
Would you suspect that one might actually get a job in the field of some type of engineering with just a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering? Or would one need a higher degree, such as a master's or a P.H.D. ? What might some possible career options be with a B.S. in Electrical engineering?
Let's say a person is working full-time on a job. Then, if he/she wanted to get a bachelor's degree in physics for example, then what's his/her best choice? To take a university's evening courses, or online courses, or what?
Suppose X is a successful practicing lawyer. He already had a bachelor degree, and some graduate degrees under his belt. He realizes after watching startrek, he wants to be a research physicist in a university. Is he too late to go back to school? I suspect he needs to get in order...
After obtaining bachelor's degree, i would like to continue my studies abroad (and I'm from Poland). I'm really interested in math/physics and highly motivated to get PhD in future - this is my aim.
I'm looking for as prestige (and by prestige i mean best conditions for studying and stuff...
I plan to be finishing high school with an Associates thanks to dual enrollment. I was wonder, how long from that, would it take for me to receive a bachelors in physics? 2 years? more?
The title of this thread speaks for itself, but to contextualize it, I should say that I am currently in the third (final ) year of my physics course and I have to choose some classes. Accordingly to the choices I have decided so far I would not do an Optics class in my course. Is that...
Guys, what do you think?
Anyone actually graduated with a bachelor in Applied Mathematics and Statistics and got a job? What is it?
So far, applied math is the easiest subject I ever encountered. Just do as the book says, don't even need to go to lecture. But I suck at computer program...
