Bioinformatics ( (listen)) is an interdisciplinary field that develops methods and software tools for understanding biological data, in particular when the data sets are large and complex. As an interdisciplinary field of science, bioinformatics combines biology, computer science, information engineering, mathematics and statistics to analyze and interpret the biological data. Bioinformatics has been used for in silico analyses of biological queries using mathematical and statistical techniques.Bioinformatics includes biological studies that use computer programming as part of their methodology, as well as a specific analysis "pipelines" that are repeatedly used, particularly in the field of genomics. Common uses of bioinformatics include the identification of candidates genes and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Often, such identification is made with the aim of better understanding the genetic basis of disease, unique adaptations, desirable properties (esp. in agricultural species), or differences between populations. In a less formal way, bioinformatics also tries to understand the organizational principles within nucleic acid and protein sequences, called proteomics.
I need to calculate H-bonds in a specific direction of a C-alpha atom of a protein. And, I need to calculate that from a PDB file.
Can anyone give me a general guideline/direction/idea regarding how to do that?
N.B. I need to write a python program.
Which of these fields would allow one to make a bigger impact on treatment of mental illnesses?
What about neurological disorders?
And if you could also explain why that would be great, Thanks!
Hello,
I want to learn biology from stratch for a hobby, I never studied it in school good enough so I want to do it now, should I go through entire Campbell Biology to grasp basic stuff?
I want to note that I want to focus on bioinformatics as I progress
One more thing to note is that I want...
Hello everyone,
m a medico.. i was wondering how's the bioinformatics MS program at Northeastern[Boston].. Does their co-op program guarantee a job? how are the salaries initially? would be a great help if someone shares any info.
Hi,
For starters, I am an Electrical Engineering student and have very little formal training in the field of Biology. Also, I am not sure if this question is more suited for the Bio or CS section of the forum.
My questions are:
- How is Bioinformatics used to observe genetic mutations...
After two years of Biology i switched to Computer Science and i wish to gain the necessary skills to become a "computational biologist/neuroscientist"
(Here we don't have the "major/minor" system, we can choose one subject and, at least, 2 "external" exams)
The problems are:
1) math level...
Hi, anybody knows any Physics PhD program concentrated in Bioinformatics or any Bioinformatics program which admits Physics students?
Thank you in advance!
Hello,
we (*) are trying to set up a combined neuroscience/information technology project for the following purpose:
ALS is a fatal neurological disease that has no known cause or cure and kills its victims within a few years. Our view is that one reason why all drugs have failed in clinical...
greetings,
I heard of Pearl and intend on learning it, yet I do have a question:
are there any better programming languages than pearl or more used and popular?
Hello friends. I am interested in what kind of job prospects there are for those who major in computational biology, bioinformatics, or biostatistics. If someone could also explain the major differences between these fields to me too, that would be very helpful.
Hello,
So today at my first day in my first year at computer science I saw those two specialties but I was confused which one to choose cause I can only choose one of them
I would like if anyone would offer me some help choosing also telling me which jobs will be available to each specialty...
Which of these to master-programs does in your opinion give best oppuotunities for employment, and which gives best oppurtunities for research-opportunities?
Hello, I am a high-school student applying to universities. I like math, and I like bio. I want a career that is the cross-section between these two subjects.
I've been told about computational biology and bioinformatics. Can anyone please share any familiar experiences or any insight...
Hi,
Is it possible to go to the field of Bioinformatics for a PhD or industry after doing Theoretical Computer Science at the MSc level, or will it require additional training in the Life Sciences?
Hello, I am starting university this winter and I have a question for those of you who know a little bit about bioinformatics.
My school allows me to take 3 minors (Math,Computer science,Software engineering) and turn them into an applied science Bachelor's degree. This allows me to skip a lot...
Hi I am an undergraduate senior and I was wondering if anyone out there has gone through a bioinformatics program. I was wondering if you need to be a bioinformatics or computer science major to take this path? Any other comments appreciated as well.
There appears to be a conflicting interest here.. its not something that I would have realized, it is only because my lecturers have said it is so.. so it must be so! But as usual, there is scant explanations on why ..
From what I see, you need structual genomics to build the algorithms for...
I've been given the neucleotide gene sequence for a protein, and been told to find out the regions where the gene is regulated. Unfortunately, the website database where they told me to go is dead!
I've tried BLASTing the sequence, but all I get is the protein it creates, with a whole...
