An Internet forum, or message board, is an online discussion site where people can hold conversations in the form of posted messages. They differ from chat rooms in that messages are often longer than one line of text, and are at least temporarily archived. Also, depending on the access level of a user or the forum set-up, a posted message might need to be approved by a moderator before it becomes publicly visible.
Forums have a specific set of jargon associated with them; example: a single conversation is called a "thread", or topic.
A discussion forum is hierarchical or tree-like in structure: a forum can contain a number of subforums, each of which may have several topics. Within a forum's topic, each new discussion started is called a thread and can be replied to by as many people as so wish.
Depending on the forum's settings, users can be anonymous or have to register with the forum and then subsequently log in to post messages. On most forums, users do not have to log in to read existing messages.
About 10 days ago my email got screwed up due to a change by my ISP. I got it fixed several days ago but I STILL am not getting notifications by email of watched threads even though I AM getting notifications on the site. According to my settings (email is correct by blacked out to avoid...
"Unfortunately your recent report was rejected:" these are NOT literary submissions, they are FYIs/PSAs/other; no fortune good, bad, or other to be attached.
As many of you know I am an admin/moderator at chemicalforums.com, site in many ways similar to PF, just related to chemistry. CF was hit much stronger than PF by changes in the way ppl use forums/websites to get info, we lost a lot of traffic, but it was still working up to the last week.
No...
Something is broken with "find all content by".
If I go to some people's pages, e.g. https://www.physicsforums.com/members/hutchphd.635497/ go to "Find" and "Find all content by", it is empty. Other people, like @Greg Bernhardt have messages show there.
I do not know what makes this happen...
I'm trying to learn LaTeX, and to use it here on the forums, but having a problem posting it. In TeXworks, I'm figuring it out, no problem, pretty simple. However, I apply LaTeX here, and when I hit "Preview", it just shows up as whatever I write, rather than the math symbols.
I went to a...
Is necroposting seen as a problem here on PF? Screenshot below from another forum shows an approach to avoiding necroposts, at least those unintentional ones.
For example.
I have a question, about what branch of physics would the question be asked?
And is that how you do it here? Ask questions based on which branch it might concern?
Is there a questions topic anywhere? I looked. Many times.
I'm not even sure if this section is the place to ask...
How did you find PF?: Tried a new search-engine and voilà; found an interesting forum!
Hi all!
I'm glad to have found this forum, it seems to be lot's of great people and information here and I'm looking forward to dive into everything!
Interestingly my previous search-engine has never put...

I just finished reading "Saucer," by Stephen Coonts. I was curious to see if this book had been discussed in the sci-fi forum. So I have been trying to search for "Coonts." No matter what I do, the search returns hits for "counts." Is there a way to make the search engine take the given...
Hello. I am new to the forum, and I wonder if there is a way to see the list of latest posts across the entire list of topics.
My apologies if this is not the proper place to ask such a question.
How did you find PF?: Science article link about the Universe being twice as old by an Ottawa physicist.
Hi people, I am unsure about what the requirements are for posting to this forum, but upon posting a basic comment on an article I was given an almost unimaginable list of requirements and...
It seems somewhat common that a poster marks the level of their thread "I" or "A" but their knowledge of the relevant subject is lower than what's needed to understand the selected level. Setting aside feasibility with the forums architecture, what do people think about language that would make...
I have unfortunately a problem, if I make my inputs only with two dollar signs, that these are not indicated, but only with 4 dollar signs.
Unfortunately, I cannot make my latex inputs in the text in such a way, like e.g.
The formula is as follows $f(x)=x^2$, form the derivative of this formula.
I want to start this post by saying I don't know much and I'm asking everything here so I don't fill the forum with a million questions. I apologize if this is not how it is done.
My questions are...

I need an economics forum very similar to the way PhysicsForums is for Maths and Physics. S done
I tried reddit and stackexchange but they were not very suitable. Stackexchange in economics was not very active and reddit was mostly about discussing the everyday issues involving economics. What...
Am a mathematical genius and computer science and other by most metrics that are available today.
Are there any other here who are confirmed to be such?
Trying to find a forum of smart people.
I am a new tutor working with students in 11th grade physics in New York City. I am required to keep notes internally on the sessions and the standards that I cover in them; after noticing that the physical science standards don’t include mentions of velocity or displacement as a content area, I...
How did you find PF?: Found on google, was the top rated physics forum on there. I need help!
I posted 2 pictures above. I’m a rancher/farmer. I grow my own feed for our cattle (outside of natural pasture, as pasture goes dormant in the winter). I built this bale mover to be able to haul...
Any suggestion of a forum that can answer question on SFML? The SFML community doesn't answer much question. I don't think it's a real forum, more like the staff answer very specific questions.
Thanks
I found this forum and registered a few minutes ago,
and the atmosphere here is so relaxing and comfortable (unlike Stack Exchange where people look like they are hungry to beat each other up)
Luv it :)
I want to work on a personal project, a web application similar to PhysicsForums just to understand how everything works. I have some basic questions.
1. What kind of database is ideal for a discussion forum like this ? SQL or NoSQL ?
2. Which frontend and backend technologies are used to...
There are hundreds of thousands of images of Mars. In my spare time, I've browsed through many, and have kept track of the most interesting ones (to my eyes). So of course, I would be interested to discuss the features I found interesting with people that are more qualified to analyze them.
I...
I was wondering why "learned" people who have degrees in physics, mathematics, and other fields of science take the time to answer stranger's questions on the internet? This is a straightforward question. Do the mentors truly enjoy answering questions on the forum?
I have a question about interactions between matter and the vacuum, but I don't see a forum for that. Quantum field theory seems to be the most closely related subject. What would be the best forum for questions related to QFT?
Hi, I am the leader of a University of the Third Age discussion group which has just been suspended due to the ongoing Coronavirus situation. I am hoping to be able to continue our discussions online in some way.
All group members are tech savvy enough to use email, and search the internet...
I am new to physics and these are my last two questions of my homework. I am extremely confused on what to do but I do know that for question 1 I need to create a triangle and solve for the hypotenuse, and for question 2 I believe I need to input my given values into the equation for...
Brief Description of New Quantum Forum Structure
A common topic of discussion regarding quantum mechanics is the foundations of QM as a theory structure and different interpretations of QM. These discussions are of interest to many PF members, but they present some unique challenges since they...
I suggest relabelling the "LaTeX guide" link, which is just below the reply box in threads. I think people who don't know LaTeX already don't necessarily recognise that this tells them how to write maths in the forum. Perhaps "How to write maths in the forum"?
Also, the guide isn't linked at...
Could anybody suggest some forums(or bbs(s)) of internal combustion engine?

In the Science and Math Textbooks Forum we gather all subjects related to textbook publications in science. This includes

I would like to see a College Algebra forum. It is a course at Lehman College that gives students lots of trouble. At Lehman, the course is known as MA104.
As the title suggests, I'm wondering what's your favorite part of this forum? I'm new to this forum, and I have started to explore the nooks and crannies, but I don't want to miss anything. I'm also familiar with Reddit physics and a lot of physics people go there, so to play devil's advocate...
Hello,
Does anyone know of a science forum that deals with far out, controversial theories & ideas? This would be similar to the science fiction forum here at PF but may even be more outlandish, however postings would receive serious consideration.
I have made some simple animations that I...
Amateur do-it-yourself projects are enjoyed by many people. Do it yourself (DIY) is the method of building, modifying, or repairing things without the direct aid of experts or professionals. Other people sometimes enjoy helping others with projects. That is what this forum is about...
