The Ivy League (also known as The Ancient Eight) is an American collegiate athletic conference comprising eight private research universities in the Northeastern United States. The term Ivy League is typically used beyond the sports context to refer to the eight schools as a group of elite colleges with connotations of academic excellence, selectivity in admissions, and social elitism. Its members are Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, and Yale University.
While the term was in use as early as 1933, it became official only after the formation of the NCAA Division I athletic conference in 1954. All of the Ivies (members of the Ivy League) except Cornell were founded during the colonial period; they thus account for seven of the nine Colonial Colleges chartered before the American Revolution. The other two colonial colleges, Rutgers University and the College of William & Mary, became public institutions instead.
Ivy League schools are viewed as some of the most prestigious universities in the world. All eight universities place in the top 18 of the 2021 U.S. News & World Report National Universities ranking, including four Ivies in the top five (Princeton, Harvard, Columbia, and Yale). U.S. News has named a member of the Ivy League as the best national university every year since 2001: as of 2020, Princeton eleven times, Harvard twice, and the two schools tied for first five times. In the 2021 U.S. News & World Report Best Global University Ranking, two Ivies rank in the top 10 internationally (Harvard first and Columbia sixth). All eight Ivy League schools are members of the Association of American Universities, the most prestigious alliance of American research universities.
Undergraduate enrollments range from about 4,500 to about 15,000, larger than most liberal arts colleges and smaller than most state universities. Total enrollment, which includes graduate students, ranges from approximately 6,600 at Dartmouth to over 20,000 at Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, and Penn. Ivy League financial endowments range from Brown's $4.7 billion to Harvard's $41.9 billion, the largest financial endowment of any academic institution in the world. The Ivy League is similar to other groups of universities in other countries such as Oxbridge in the United Kingdom, the C9 League in China, and the Imperial Universities in Japan.
Hey!
I'm a 11th grader right now, and I'm really interested in majoring in physics, and maybe engineering too. Now, I know that it's really hard to get into MIT, Harvard, Caltech, and all those really great institutes with amazing physics undergrad courses (The best in the world apparently...

I currently study Nanotechnology at UNAM's (National Autonomous University of Mexico) CNyN (Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. I have an 8.85 / 10.00, or roughly a 3.54 GPA (when calculated) but I see that for convenience, 3.5GPA is usually equivalent to a 9.00 / 10.00. *
Is it...
Hi,
I have a few years left on my undergraduate degree but I wanted to see if anyone has experience applying to Stanford for graduate school.
I started UCSD as a liberal arts major and then switched to physics about 10 months ago. I have about 130 community college units (you only need 80, I...
Is it true that graduates from ivy league universities (particularly Harvard) are sought after by employers more so than grads from lesser colleges? Aren't there certain jobs and career paths (like investment banking) that are reserved exclusively for ivy league grads?

Hello, I've been wondering about universities in the US. So what are relatively good universities in physics with a low tuition and good financial aid for international students? (Good universities in physics as in those that come in second or third after the "famous and prestigious"...

Are Oxford, Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, Columbia, Pennsylvania, Cornell, Yale universities just names ??
Certainly the most successful people graduate from these universities, is this because they somehow attract only the bright students, or is it because the quality of education and teaching...
I am a masters student at some Canadian school best known for astrophysics (and one of the premier schools in the world for white dwarves), dreaming to get into the likes of UPenn (a reach, but not a pipe dream-level reach à la Harvard and Princeton, which some over-ambitious recommender advised...
I am a rising Senior in high school, and planning to major in Physics, with the intent of pursuing a Doctorate in Physics. Recently I received a "golden application" to the Colorado School of Mines (http://www.mines.edu/)... a school that I was not previously familiar with. Apparently this...
So as of late, I've really come to taking a serious interest in physics. I'm in eleventh grade. I don't expect to go to a prestigious college like Harvard etc, just to get a physics degree. Throughout High School, I haven't been the best student, I haven't tried as hard or applied myself as hard...
So I'm not too sure of my chances of getting into the following universities:
- Princeton
- Caltech
- MIT
- Polytechnic Institute of New York
- Harvard (I know its very unlikey)
Now my last year of high school will be 2017, yes I am still in grade 9. Recently I've been doing the math & I...

Dissection -- mandatory for high school and university?
Is dissection mandatory for high school and university (biology as a major)? Can one be exempt due to religion and use virtual tech like harvard does?
Well, I was wondering if the SAT is actually required for applying to 'elite' educational institutes, such as Harvard, MIT or Caltech.
I ask this because my cousin is refusing to take the SAT, but gets outstanding grades in school; and have received 5s his subjects tests.
Would they take...

Hello, all.

Hi everyone,
I am currently an undergrad studying Physics in one of the top uni in Hong Kong,
and I have a question for a long time:
if I want to be a professor/successful scientist, is it important that I should get a post-grad degree from the top universities in the world? (ie: MIT...
Sounds ridiculous to not do well, right? I won't flunk, but I am shooting for at least a 3.7 GPA. I want to have a shot at UC Berkeley, UC Davis, Caltech, and Harvey Mudd.
If I get 3.7 or less (maybe around 3.6), will my chance of getting into my dream schools be null for life?
I just...
Hello PF community,

Hi All,
I am looking into engineering and physics grad schools. I have a good deal of information available, and am trying to sort through it. Has anyone used Wolfram Alpha to do anythings like this? From basic comparisons like "Harvard University, Princeton University" it will give you a...
If this is the wrong forum for this, I apologize. I tried to narrow this question to the right section.
I somehow ended up on a Harvard undergraduate maths webpage for incoming freshman. The first two courses I read were pretty gnarly but I have read enough posts on this website throughout...
I went to Harvard as an undergrad, but I was exceedingly poorly prepared in more or less every respect. I ended up finishing with a 3.3 GPA and a 3.1 concentration GPA (My pure math classes are higher (3.45), the lower grade is because I counted four physics classes towards my major that I...
I go to a small liberal arts school. I always wanted to go to the best school I could, but I grew up in a small town with almost zero resources and had to deal with some pretty scary abusive family stuff for most of my life. I got kind of screwed up for awhile and barely scraped my way into...
I am from INDIA and want to go in one of the ivy league universities.I had an excellent academic record and also an reccomendation letter from CSIR (India's premier government research body) assiatant scientist as i have worked with him on a research paper (yet to be published).

Sorry if the title seems confusing, but I'm basically asking if there's data on which schools those admitted to an Ivy League came from, or earned their bachelor's from.
Searches on Google simply give me percentages on those who applied that were admitted. Help would be appreciated.
Ok. I'm a late bloomer into science. I'm 21 almost 22. I am about out of the military. During my high school years I didn't push myself. I stayed around a 2.8 to 3.2 GPA and top 40% of my class not high. I've changed since then and always test extremely high. I was selected for AP classes but...
Hey everybody, I'm a high school senior about to apply to college and major in some science (anything from biochemistry to physics to math). Princeton University is my first choice, but it's going to be expensive for my family and me, especially considering I will most likely go to grad school...
