Distance education, also called distance learning, is the education of students who may not always be physically present at a school. Traditionally, this usually involved correspondence courses wherein the student corresponded with the school via mail. Today, it involves online education. A distance learning program can be completely distance learning, or a combination of distance learning and traditional classroom instruction (called hybrid or blended). Massive open online courses (MOOCs), offering large-scale interactive participation and open access through the World Wide Web or other network technologies, are recent educational modes in distance education. A number of other terms (distributed learning, e-learning, m-learning, online learning, virtual classroom etc.) are used roughly synonymously with distance education.
Greetings guys with highest IQ's on planet earth,

I'm going into Senior year. I live I have taken 9 (3 I paid for so they don't count as dual enrollment) dual enrollment courses and next year I'm taking 4 more. I've reached my limit on college dual enrollment courses yet I have 2 spots in my schedule. I would like to use these to take...
Hey, everyone! I'm wanting to start doing the online MIT physics course, but I'm having a difficult time deciding which section to go for. I'm wanting a very thorough understanding of Physics, as I would eventually like to have a PhD in the topic. My community college isn't thorough at all, so...
Hi physics forums, I'm in a bit of a situation and I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice.
I'll start out describing the problem. I am currently a senior in high school but there is this program where I can take two classes at the local university. My original plan was to take calc...
I have a bachelors in math and want a graduate degree.
There is a degree at a nearby school that is not "mathematics" but is "Masters of Science in Community and Technical College Mathematics." A lot of it is online, so I can continue working.
Even if I did very well in this program, does...
Hello!
I have used Stewart's Calculus for the last year of Calculus and we made it through Taylor and MacLaurin Series. Next year we will be continuing. Since I really enjoyed calculus and I'm thinking of studying math/physics/computer science in college, I was looking for a good textbook to...
I'm an incoming senior in high school and beginning college apps. I'm looking into majors and trying to figure out which is best for me.
I have a couple of questions about physics vs mechanical engineering:
1) Which field is best for a woman, not only in college but as a career?
2) Is a...
Right now, I am left to my own devices in that I have to build math skills quite rapidly in the next few months as my local schools are on strike and I am not able to sign up for online school or community college.
What is the best approach for learning math on my own?
I have prealgebra...
I was recently kicked out of my teacher licensing program at an online university because my host teacher and I were not compatible. I was demonstration teaching at a high school and I knew it was a lost cause when the HT said "It's obvious you're going to have a different teaching style that me...
I am a junior doing a major in electrical engineering, with a minor in mathematics (maybe a double major). The university I am going to doesn't have a masters program for electrical engineering though. I am also a non-traditional student (in that I am in my late twenties, and didn't start...

Hey everyone,
Last summer I had realized that my interest in science had spiked dramatically, and more specifically, the cosmos and physics, so I decided to research the available colleges around me and decided to start off at a community college to take the entry level courses to see if my...
Im still not 100% sure on engineering, last year i was set on civil engineering but took a year off and changed my mind too mechanical as it was more broad.
I have accepted this program from seneca college in Toronto and was wondering what other engineers/professionals think of the program...
My college offers both online and offline math classes. I'm to the point now, where the math classes offered online are fewer, I need I believe up to calculus. I like the setup of online because I work like most people, and it gives me a week to complete homework and tests, rather than 2 days...
Both sons were offered a full-tuition scholarship at UAH and at the University of Alabama. Son 2 is going to accept at UAH and wants to do a double major in Aerospace and Mechanical.
Here's the dilemma: Son 1 really wants to major in nuclear engineering, which would require him turning...

I've been working as an ME for approximately 3 years and I'm not enjoying what I'm doing as much as I'd have hoped. I'm currently completing an MS in ME Control Systems, which I absolutely love (2 courses from completion).
During my MS coursework I've taken a lot of EE courses on electric...
Sorry I don't have a picture right now. But this has had me wondering and I can't find anything online about it. In my college in all the bathrooms and laundry rooms I see these sensors in the ceiling which is just a 6" metal rod hanging. There are your regular smoke detectors and everything on...
I'm having a tough time finding paper that I can write on comfortably, I'm used to 4-hole standard A4 sized paper, as this is very common in Europe. I like how I could easily slip in printed problem sheets, book excerpts, or journal articles into my notes and have everything neat and flush...
Warning: I am aware of my careless actions but please help me out
Ok, I'm a Jr in highschol, I have a 3.7 GPA I've taken honors math and I'm taking ap calculus next year so I'm good with math. I haven't dealt with physics since about 7th grade and my experience with it wasn't that bad. I was...
Hello there, users of Physics Forums!
My name's Keyan, and I'm a graduated 18-year-old. I only have my GED, unfortunately, but I plan to explain that happenstance in what may be a rather long post. I'm hopeful that the community here can help me make some decisions about my future and how to go...
I'm 19, aspiring to go into professional physics, most probably in the astrophysics branch. I'm mostly attracted to gravity (please do not mind the pun), quantum mechanics, string theory, the remote possibility of FTL travel using Alcubierre Drives (or better technology, someday), fusion, et al...

At this point, I have about $45 credit in my iTunes account from gift cards given to me for Christmas. I was wondering if there are any useful apps out there that I can get for physics? Whether they are good now for while I am in college, good for work in the field post-college, or both. For...
Hello everyone. I am a junior in high school right now, and I have been fascinated by physics & astronomy for a few years now. I love math and science in general. I haven't taken a course in physics quite yet (I am taking AP Physics next year). I am considering getting my BS in physics and then...
I've taken online courses in the past at Coursera and the Saylor Foundation and had a mostly good experience with them. I've taken them firstly to learn and secondly on the off-chance that they may provide some (albeit tenuous) evidence of achievement, or at least of intent. They also provide...

I have just finished high school and I will be entering college soon. The problem is, I cannot decide which course suits me the best. Whether it is Network Engineering or Telecommunication Engineering. To tell...
First off I want to apologize if there is a topic about this type of thing already that I missed. I went back through the last 5 pages and didn't see anything that seemed to fit it and am unsure of what I would need to search for to look through that function.
Past that, I am a Mathematics...
Good evening (afternoon, morning, depending on where you are),
I'm very interested in Arizona State University's Electrical Engineering program. It is one hundred percent online, just like the title says, and the labs are given to the student in kits. The advisers can't give me more...
Good Morning everyone and thanks for taking the time to look at (and hopefully) reply to my thread!
I am a US marine and my only choices of colleges are currently online. I have almost 4 years left on my contract (out of 6) so I defintely want to get a head start in my dream of being a...

Some of my ideas are: Assign...
It's difficult to get anywhere with a "general" STEM major like Math, Physics, Chemistry, Statistics or Biology, unless you know specifically what type of job you want and you know how to use your major to market a specific skill set related to that job. It's okay to choose one of those majors...
Because of my current financial situation, I must work at least part time while furthering my education. I've been looking into accredited online colleges that offer some kind of Engineering program, I haven't found any. What I have found: Southern New Hampshire University offers a Bachelor of...
