Real options valuation, also often termed real options analysis, (ROV or ROA) applies option valuation techniques to capital budgeting decisions. A real option itself, is the right—but not the obligation—to undertake certain business initiatives, such as deferring, abandoning, expanding, staging, or contracting a capital investment project. For example, real options valuation could examine the opportunity to invest in the expansion of a firm's factory and the alternative option to sell the factory.Real options are generally distinguished from conventional financial options in that they are not typically traded as securities, and do not usually involve decisions on an underlying asset that is traded as a financial security. A further distinction is that option holders here, i.e. management, can directly influence the value of the option's underlying project; whereas this is not a consideration as regards the underlying security of a financial option. Moreover, management cannot measure uncertainty in terms of volatility, and must instead rely on their perceptions of uncertainty. Unlike financial options, management also have to create or discover real options, and such creation and discovery process comprises an entrepreneurial or business task. Real options are most valuable when uncertainty is high; management has significant flexibility to change the course of the project in a favorable direction and is willing to exercise the options.Real options analysis, as a discipline, extends from its application in corporate finance, to decision making under uncertainty in general, adapting the techniques developed for financial options to "real-life" decisions. For example, R&D managers can use Real Options Valuation to help them deal with various uncertainties in making decisions about the allocation of resources among R&D projects. A non business example might be the decision to join the work force, or rather, to forgo several years of income to attend graduate school. It, thus, forces decision makers to be explicit about the assumptions underlying their projections, and for this reason ROV is increasingly employed as a tool in business strategy formulation. This extension of real options to real-world projects often requires customized decision support systems, because otherwise the complex compound real options will become too intractable to handle.
I'm a current undergrad in my 3rd year, and I'm trying to get things in check to keep my options open for my two biggest passions for grad school and thereafter.
I'm interested in theoretical physics relating to dark energy, dark matter, black holes, and the like. At the same time, even more...

I'm on centos 7. I'm wondering what could be the differences between these two?
I've read this but could not grasp what they're trying to say. Can you give me an example scenario to work with?

I was wondering if humans send spacecraft far enough into space in the future (for example Alpha Centauri or other star systems further away), is there any particular distance where it might make more sense to communicate between star systems by making a star blink with some sort of shutter...
I'm building a power hammer for a buddy's forge and am working through the design phase. We are going to use a 1200lb leaf spring to actuate the upper anvil. Pretty much got the mechanical design down, but having some issues with the selection of motor and control.
The leaf spring we selected...
Once the water began to boil running up the reaction rate in Chernobyl unit 4, was there something different than the AZ-5 switch that the operators could have done which would have saved the reactor, or at least limited what happened to a meltdown?
I'm in a tough spot right now, and would appreciate learning about my options.
I'm fully vaccinated with the Moderna vaccine, and reasonably good for travel options to most western countries for business trips now (modulo the Delta variant surge and its restrictions). I really need to travel...
I posted here before about my struggle to secure a job in Canada. I am still in the same position. Many and many rejections letters. I consulted with someone I know who is working in the industry in my field, and told me "honestly, with 3 years gap in the last 6, and 4 years since your last job...
I thought I had a long-term backup of my important stuff when I bought a 1Tb Seagate External Drive. It died and took years of projects and memories with it.
Running Win10 on a laptop.
I think there are three options:
Another (better) external drive
Some newfangled solid-state external drive...

hi everyone, I am 30 years old and always had a affinity for physics. i was wondering since i was never any good at school, what career options would you recomend.
The motor from this fine, old and very heavy machine is designed to take UK 3ph, 415V. There are only three connections inside, and the nameplate says it’s wired in star. I have stripped it down and cannot locate the star point.
I was hoping to rewire it to delta, and run it with a 1ph/240V to...
Summary: My school does not offer any engineering majors.
I am attending university this upcoming fall and I have realized that I more interested in bioengineering than chemistry or biology. The only bad thing is that my university does not offer any engineering degrees. Should I major in...
I'm trying to make a magnetic globe (magnetic from outside) with diameter of about 30 cm. Please imagine it as a snow globe, while it is magnetic as well :). I'm wondering about the options to make it, as light as possible.

I'm an old man. I cut my teeth on *pew pew* games in the video arcades of bowling alleys. I burned out my video game organ decades ago.
The only carryover was games like Myst and SimCity and some of those Discover new lands type games. I like construction games rather than competitive or battle...
Hi PF,
I graduated (MSc) six months ago with a 3.7/4.0 GPA and is still unemployed. During my time at university, I focused on my studies and did not give my future work life much thought. Consequently, I do not really know what my options are as a physicist. Sure, after reading countless job...

Hello, I was wondering whether one same protein can assume different foldings that can do different functions in the organism? (each folding still having the usual active/inactive state)
And if the is a specific example for this?
Many thanks for any thoughts!

At present, I'm trying to determine whether I should pursue a masters degree in health physics vs medical physics in pursuit of a career in radiation safety. From what I've seen in RSO job postings, requirements can vary rather widely depending on the institution, state...
Hello, thank you for your time in reading this.
I graduated in 2016 with a 3.0ish GPA in Physics and Math in Ontario. I have no research experience because I felt my GPA disqualified me from the right to approach professors for those positions. However, now that I have graduated and given both...
Hi everyone. One of the perennial favourite topics here in the Career Guidance section is the employability of physics graduates, including those with just a BSc degree instead of a PhD.
