Summer is the hottest of the four temperate seasons, falling after spring and before autumn. At or around the summer solstice (about 3 days before Midsummer Day), the earliest sunrise and latest sunset occurs, the days are longest and the nights are shortest, with day length decreasing as the season progresses after the solstice. The date of the beginning of summer varies according to climate, tradition, and culture. When it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere, it is winter in the Southern Hemisphere, and vice versa.
2024 AAPT Summer Meeting in Boston, MA
https://www.aapt.org/Conferences/SM2024/
I'll be there Sun July 7 to Wed July 10.
Anyone else going?
I used to attend at least one meeting (Winter or Summer) each year.
It's my first in-person AAPT conference since the pandemic.
I have a poster on Sunday...
Rectangular office accommodates 10 people, two doors and one wall has windows the full length of the room.
My office is within, no windows and no direct sunlight there.
The temperature went from 20C at 8am to 25C by 3pm.
Similar temp in the main office.
All windows were open so my thinking is...
Hello!
I am a high-school student and I am graduating this year. I got into college, so I am shifting my focus on to things I can do before the fall to advance my learning and career. I was curious if anyone knew about opportunities that might be available for someone in my position.
I live...
I am currently finishing my first year as a Ph.D. Physics student in the U.S.. Research opportunities are limited at my university. Are there any outside opportunities to do paid summer research, maybe in Canada, in fields related to condensed matter physics, photonics, or biological physics? I...
In youtube channels and google images it shows the ITCZ as a band that stretches all around the equator, however the Earth is on a 23 degree tilt so in a northern summer the sun should hit the Earth at roughly the tropic of Cancer at 23 degree north of the Equator. This is where the ITCZ will be...
Where do I look for Summer placements [UK based] that are vaguely related to my degree [physics]? As it stands I'm going to spend the next two and a half months in Tesco if I can't find anything, which is fine but probably won't count for much in the future. Is it too late by this point in the...
https://www.espn.com/olympics/story/_/id/31560502/the-many-hurdles-summer-tokyo-olympics
Despite the global COVID-19 pandemic still carrying on (and even a recent fourth wave in Japan - host nation of the Olympics - that's seen some areas of the country placed into a state of emergency since...
Hey everyone!
This is a forum for anyone who applied to the DoE CCI Summer 2021 Internships. Has anyone gotten a reply back from their labs? I am waiting on LLNL and SNL. I applied for Biotechnology, Engineering technology-Bio, and Energy Technology Bio.
-Feel free if you have heard back...
Hi everyone,
This thread is for people to post whether or not they received any offerings from SULI 2021 program.
I am very anxious for this internship as I really want to get a position at Argonne Lab doing Condensed Matter Theory research or Quantum Computing research. I am a junior physics...
https://www.aapt.org/Conferences/SM2020/index.cfm
I wasn't originally planning to attend the meeting in Grand Rapids.
But when it went virtual, I submitted an abstract before the original abstract deadline in March.
They extended the deadline for abstract submission to June 3. Unfortunately...
https://www.aapt.org/Conferences/SM2020/
Hopefully, it will be free to register, like the recent APS Virtual April Meeting.
In that APS meeting, you had to register to view the presentations, whether live or pre-recorded.
Registrants could also watch a recording of a live session.
During live...
It might be little early now, but in the next few weeks decisions for REUs should be coming out. So I thought I’d make a thread about what REU offers that people are getting. What different programs are people waiting to hear back from?
I personally applied to:
U of Michigan (Non-CERN)
Purdue...
I think about Three Body Problem and Game of Thrones.
Both show erratic, unpredictable shifting of summer and winter times. Of course, GoT don't bother with physical explanation, but could this behavior occur in a binary star system, or with other conditions, like stellar clouds?
Three Body...
This is a project that I wanted to do in the past 3 years, but I never was sure enough because I don't know how to calculate thermal transfer in a submerged coil to at least have an approximation of what to expect.
I want a cheap solution to pass the summer days without cook myself or wasting a...
Hi,
I'm a 3rd year under-graduate student studying at a good European University (in the EU, in the Great Britain),
and would like to apply for summer research project in the US for the summer. For theoretical Physics, such as gravity.
However I have heard that the USA is expensive and I cannot...
I just finished my second year at a European University. I did some laser-related experimental summer research after first year, and am currently doing a condensed matter experimental summer research (both at European research institutes).
Next year I would like to work at an Ivy League...
I am about to commence a 3 month summer internship as an applied physicist. The job role involves working within the R&D department performing on the bench experimentation involving optical and electromagnetic sensing and analysis using python. Having finished my University exams on June the...
Summary: (undergrad student) What is something I can do this summer to develop my creative instinct in engineering?
Hey everyone!
I am currently an undergrad freshman studying mechanical engineering. I love the courses and I understand the scientific concepts, but I know that engineering is a...
I thought there would already be a thread for this by now, but there isn't so here we go! Post REU offers/acceptances and such here to help each other out :)
Here's my list:
Texas A&M Cyclotron - Accepted 2/22
Duke TUNL (first round offers scheduled to be sent out 2/25)
UChicago for Women &...
...I feel very uncomfortable asking any of the teachers who have taught the classes I have taken so far. There was one teacher who I was considering asking to be one of my two references. I have already tried e-mailing him even though he has left the university, but he did not reply; whether it...
Hi everybody!
I've just finished my 4th year of physics degree (1st year of the masters degree, to be more exact) and I feel that I've spent most of my time reading theory and studying proofs and very few time on actual problem solving. In order to change that, I decided this summer go through...
There are a lot of strategies that can help to avoid it being total hell indoors in this hot weather.
We've had many threads about Air Con and Air Coolers but these things are not widely used in the UK and it's too late to contemplate AC because they've all been sold! There are other ways...
Is anyone attending the AAPT SU18 conference in Washington, DC? I am, and I have signed up for the LabEscape (I guess we need to solve a mystery to 'escape from the lab'), but need 6 people in the group to play this game. If you are going and interested in taking part in this cool puzzle game...
It has been an unusually hot summer where I live.
I am not surprised to be getting ads for 'room coolers' due to this.
However are not such devices contrary to well known physics?
In regions where hot summers are usual. air conditioners are used, they pump the excess heat outside.
How though can...
Let me provide some background here. I am an Electrical Engineering student and will be entering my Senior year this fall. I was lucky enough to secure a summer internship with a company for the duration of the summer.
I am starting to realize that I may have not been so lucky. I am practically...
Anyone going?? I recently renewed my membership having let it go for ~20 years and since I live on the edge of the District and work in the District I was thinking of going.
Maybe have a meet and greet among the Forum members??
Next semester I will be taking Calculus 2 and Multi-variable calculus together and was wondering what textbooks would help me prepare and allow me to become comfortable with the material that will be covered. I have not found a thread that discussed a textbook(s) that would prepare for both, so...
When should I give up on getting an REU? Should I ask my professors if they know anybody who'll need help this summer? If so, will these be paid? Because I'd do research if I could, but the bills still need to be paid.
After thinking a lot about my posts earlier about doing research elsewhere over the summer and discussing things with my professors, I wanted to thank the people here (specifically @Vanadium 50, for being straightforward) for what they said earlier as it made me reflect on my thoughts and...
Hi I am is desperate need of advice, I live in sunny South Africa have 10 trout dams on an estate for catch and keep purposes. Each dam is approximately 2,5 Acres and 3 metres +/- 10FT deep in certain areas. The main issue is in summer the water temperature is sitting at 28deg celsius 82...
..in a taught masters (UK).
My undergrad project was a literature review on general relativity
The topic of my project this summer (3 months) will be modified theories of gravity & cosmology.
How do you go about doing some original work at this level?
- would the first step be to identify a...
Hi all who view this, I am currently a high school senior and I plan to go to a community college for my first two years of college study to try and find what I would like to major in before embarking on a certain major I may not even find all that interesting later on.
I love science, but my...
It is that time of year again. Here's a space to check on acceptances for REU programs or other summer jobs. SULI and SURF come to mind. I imagine most of them will start coming by the end of the month. What are you waiting on? What are you excited for? What do you wish you had applied for? What...
The call for papers has been announced for

So I have the opportunity to work at the University of Arizona this upcoming summer in High Energy Physics. This is an amazing opportunity since I get to spend a summer doing research at a university different than my own (although it will be unpaid). But I am wondering, how good will it be when...
I was talking to my friend and she told me how she was taking Calculus 1 over the summer in 5 weeks. Everyone else averaging a 30 percent as their overall grade. The teacher was planning to raise the grade. So if you get a 30%, you'll get a C.
However, my question is that is it okay to pass...
How's your summer been so far?
Summer is for lovers and losers. If your summer hasn't been this chaotic, then DiracPool says create some chaos. That's what it's all about!
I am searching for an undergraduate level summer school, not the ones where you are being taught like an ordinary semester, but preferably the ones where you take a fast 1-2 week concentrated courses, and maybe some research. Something like Plasma Surf.
I want something that is either related...
It's that time again! Summer Games Done Quick is starting tomorrow!
What is SGDQ you ask? I'll let wiki do the talking:
Games Done Quick is a semiannual video game speedrun charity marathon held in the United States, originally organized by the Speed Demos Archive and Speedruns Live...
Hi all,
I'm a second year undergraduate studying physics living in London, searching for something productive to do over the summer. I'm free from now until the end of September. I know it's probably too late to apply for a scientific internship, but would appreciate any advice on things I can...
I'm a substitute teacher with one year of classroom experience under my belt. I have just been hired to teach a summer school physics class. The class is 4 weeks long.
The regular physics teacher taught this course a few years ago and has some powerpoints, lessons, documents, etc. but they are...
At my community college, the first calculus based physics courses (the predecessor to modern physics) are split into 3 semesters: mechanics, electromagnetism, and thermodyamics/light. As long as you take the mechanics part first, you can choose which one to take next. This summer session is 8...
So I applied to a few places for a summer REU internship for physics research. I got made an offer from Brown University and Notre Dame and am trying to decide between the two. Brown offers me research in marine geophysics/topology sort of stuff and a $3700 stipend. Notre dame offers me to...
As the title says...I am hoping for recommendations for the 2017 summer. Specifically, Southeast US, one week residential, hopefully under or around 500 dollar physics or astronomy camp for rising 9-12 graders. Thank you very much.
I am a high school sophomore at a prestigious STEM school. I am currently looking for a summer program or internship that I could do bc my school requires an internship experience for junior and senior years. I am really good at robotics and have done well in VEX competitions. I am also very...
