The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom (UK) or Britain, is a sovereign country in north-western Europe, off the north-western coast of the European mainland. The United Kingdom includes the island of Great Britain, the north-eastern part of the island of Ireland, and many smaller islands within the British Isles. Northern Ireland shares a land border with the Republic of Ireland. Otherwise, the United Kingdom is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, with the North Sea to the east, the English Channel to the south and the Celtic Sea to the south-west, giving it the 12th-longest coastline in the world. The Irish Sea separates Great Britain and Ireland. The total area of the United Kingdom is 93,628 square miles (242,500 km2).
The United Kingdom is a unitary parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy. The monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, has reigned since 1952. The capital is London, a global city and financial centre with an urban area population of 10.3 million.
The United Kingdom consists of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Their capitals are London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast, respectively. Other than England, the constituent countries have their own devolved governments, each with varying powers. The union between the Kingdom of England (which included Wales) and the Kingdom of Scotland in 1707 to form the Kingdom of Great Britain, followed by their union in 1801 with the Kingdom of Ireland, created the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Most of Ireland seceded from the UK in 1922, leaving the present formulation of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which formally adopted the name in 1927 to reflect the change. The nearby Isle of Man, Guernsey and Bailiwick of Jersey are not part of the UK, being Crown Dependencies with the British Government responsible for defence and international representation. There are also 14 British Overseas Territories, the last remnants of the British Empire which, at its height in the 1920s, encompassed almost a quarter of the world's landmass and a third of the world's population, and was the largest empire in history. British influence can be observed in the language, culture and the legal and political systems of many of its former colonies. The United Kingdom has the world's fifth-largest economy by nominal gross domestic product (GDP), and the tenth-largest by purchasing power parity (PPP). It has a high-income economy and a very high human development index rating, ranking 13th in the world. The UK became the world's first industrialised country and was the world's foremost power during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Today the UK remains one of the world's great powers, with considerable economic, cultural, military, scientific, technological and political influence internationally. It is a recognised nuclear weapon state and is ranked sixth globally in military expenditure. It has been a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council since its first session in 1946.
The United Kingdom is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, the Council of Europe, the G7, the G20, NATO, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Interpol and the World Trade Organization (WTO). It was a member of the European Union (EU) and its predecessor, the European Economic Community (EEC), from 1973 until withdrawing in 2020.
I'm an American, but I did my BSc in the UK and am currently doing an MSc in the UK. I am looking at PhD programs in both countries, but I'm worried that a PhD done in the UK won't be as well regarded in the US due to its shorter length.
Are British PhDs really seen as not as valuable in the...
Just wondering if anyone here is familiar with the Cass Report, which was recently published in the UK?
I've been reading a lot of different stuff on it, including criticisms of it's methodology. I was wondering if anyone here might have any insights into the report itself or the criticisms of it?
I find that Oxford and Cambrige dont have aerospace engineering, only mechanical engineering/pathway aerospace.
What do you think about that or is better to study "pure" aerospace?
What university do you suggest?
Also I checked that subjects are very different at each university.. I checked...
I have a few question about education system in UK..
Primary education 6years same subjects for everyone?
Has secondary education (5 years)more courses or it is same for everyone?
further education (2 years) what are courses? (for exapmle if you want be mechanic who repair cars, you go to...
Other than well known institutions such as University of Cambridge and Oxford. What are grad programs that are worth considering for a Phd? I am still narrowing down my niche, but I am interested in Theoretical physics, Mathematical Physics, and high energy physics.
I have searched for almost all courses and all universities and found that the fees of universities in UK is more than 10 times than those of Germany (if I were to convert both of those national currencies in my country's currency). Had education been some market product, I would have instantly...

Hi Everyone,
As the title suggests, I'm looking for some career advice. I want to go into software development (but feel free to suggest any other areas where I might be a good fit, I've also been looking at risk analysis positions). I have experience in a bunch of different areas but it feels...
I applied for a couple of PhD positions in astronomy last year but was unsuccessful. This year I hope to improve on my application and secure a position.
So with that in mind, does anyone have any exemplar PhD personal statements for astronomy, or maybe physics in general?
Well, I have a bit of a complicated situation and I'd love some advice.
I'm a US/UK citizen living and working in London, UK at the moment. My husband and I are currently looking at moving back to the US in 2-3 years.
My background is in physics/astrophysics - B.S. Physics (Maths minor) from a...
Hello everyone. I am an international student going for my undergraduate studies in physics. I want to go to the University of Toronto and the University of Manchester, but I am unable to choose between the two. Which of the two universities is best to study physics, can give me a better chance...
Hey,
I have some trouble deciding between 4 courses at the University of Sheffield (I am applying late, but there are still vacancies on all of these courses and as far as I know I can get a place at anyone of them). All of these courses are Foundation Year (FY) courses (they include an...
The story is that I did some wiring additions ` couple of years ago. I extended a Ring Main (cover your eyes dear US readers) and bought one of those socket checkers for a few quid. I have got this far in my life without one but I though why not splash out. The connections, of course, checked...
Hi Everyone,
I applied for some PhD positions in astronomy this year and was unsuccessful. I was wondering if anyone could offer up some advice for improving my applications for next year.
To give you some context:
I gained my Master's in Physics with Astronomy from the University of...
Hello,
I'm currently in high school, I want to study aerospace engineering, what are best universities to do undergraduate studies in Europe outside of UK?
Hello everyone!
I'm studying Physics at college and next year I'll be doing a course abroad in the UK. After doing some research and considering my college's international agreements I have to decide between Durham University, Manchester University, and the Imperial College of London, but I...
When I record slow motion video of my filament bulb lamp connected to mains, I can be completely sure that it flashes 25 times per second. This is half of the 50 hertz AC frequency. I would expect it to flash 100 times per second as the current reaches a node twice per cycle in it’s AC wave. Why...
From reading the paper I cited in the summary, I am guessing CamSpec is a software tool for statistical analysis. I did a Internet search, but did not find anything other than mentioning CamSpec being used, but not what it does, except that there is a UK company...
Hello there! I am currently studying Astrophysics (3rd year) in Scotland and would like to shift my premature career path into medical physics. Now, I have few questions that I cannot answer online so I though it would be better to do it here.
Here we go..
My question is how to actually...
If I haven't heard back as of yet, does that mean that I haven't been shortlisted? When are interviews usually held and when do people usually find out? My feeling is that if I haven't heard back from the universities as of yet, I haven't been shortlisted but I'm hoping someone more...
In many british universities, like the University of Cambridge, the UK bachelor (1st class), with a duration of 3 years, is the minimum accepted requirement to apply for a PhD. This is, some PhD students only hold a UK bachelor, without a Master's degree. I was wondering if a british bachelor...
Hi,
I'm applying for 2020 entry in the UK (coming from Poland) and the subject that I'm most interested in is BSc in Physics and Philosophy (well maybe next to Natural Sciences degree, but I feel like that's out of my grasp), with the intent to later pursue MSc, PhD and ultimately an academic...
My daughter has had to defer university application for a year and switch to "Plan B". Can anyone recommend UK universities giving courses relating to Psychology and Neuroscience (together if possible)? Also any refererence/text books that would be useful as an introduction to similar course(s)?

Hi! I'm currently in my second year of a five year integrated masters degree in physics. When applying, I chose to study just plain physics as I didn't really know what I wanted to do and I didn't want to limit my options. However, for the past year and a half, and honestly before that too, I've...

I have read that postdocs are extremely hard to come by in Astrophysics, and is likely a dead end at the end of the PHD and that Condensed Matter is less competitive in academia. Would a Condensed Matter PhD also provide more opportunities in UK science industry - in particular the life sciences...
Hi I am a medical physicist in the uk with a desire to transition to Canada. I am in the process of applying for permanent residency via the Canada express entry. We have a similar organisation to CAMPEP that accredits our physicists in the UK, called IPEM. I have an accredited MSc from IPEM...
Hi
This is probably only suitable for answers from UK members because it's about the specific problem of DTV in the London area. Freeview channels in London cover pretty much the whole of the UHF band now.
Three years ago we moved into the house and I noticed that the range of Freeview...
This year 18/19 I will be graduating in December/January with a 2:2 in Physics from QUB in NI. I would absolutely love to have further research/academia in my future physics career. I would like some advice from a UK or ROI based masters students (preferably on the island of Ireland) or anyone...

Hi, I am currently about to begin self studying for UK maths a-levels, however I am also wanting to gain a solid understanding of calculus. I know that calculus is covered in a-levels, but, the books for a-levels seem to be not as dense or as good as the US books I believe.
My question is...
As the title says, any ideas of great places that a physicist tourist could visit in US or UK?
I have been thinking about the Cavendish laboratory, Cambridge University, but I don't know whether it's open for visitors.
Hi,
I am currently studying for an MPhys in the UK. In the UK this is considered essentially equivalent to an MSc and a BSc although the structure is a little different: the first 2 years are the exact same as a bachelors course, then my 3rd year I am currently spending in Denmark doing mostly...
Has anyone got a good link to a guide to UK power lines? I hate looking up and not knowing what's there.
For example, my house has several poles leading to it, strung with one live 240V and one neutral, the latter being tapped to Earth at each pole.
What if there are two lines, strung...
It's easy to get information about the channels that the various 2G, 3G, 4G services use but I want to find out the actual frequency my service uses in my home. I was hoping to try a 'passive relay' arrangement to bring the (totally rubbish) signal from upstairs to downstairs by my computer. I...

Hey,
I'm looking for a bit of advice with regards to applying for a PhD program in Europe.
As a bit of background: I graduated from Durham University in 2013 with a 1st class MPhys in Theoretical Physics. My thesis (which contributed to half of the grading in the 4th, masters year) was focused...
I am a physics PhD at a globally top 10 UK institution. I'm interested in moving to California for two reasons:
- The weather.
- I believe the US economy is higher growth than the rest of the modernised world.
My subject area is not 'hot' so I doubt I'd be able to get a good postdoc. Are the...
Hi there,
Please forgive my ignorance, but when it comes to changing plugs, I am a complete novice.
I have a European 2-Pin plug, 2.A and 250V (One blue, one brown wire).
As I am in the UK, this doesn't work in our sockets.
I need to change it over to a 3-Pin, UK plug. But, when I went to...
