The article explained that Carter and others believed they saw a UFO, not some alien craft but a genuine unidentified flying object, and they described it as such.

Carter was an experienced amateur skywatcher and US Navy officer.

His critics papered him with the notion of UFOs as alien crafts to tear him down publicly.

Oh yes. Old news. Many people simply report what they see and get tarred and feathered for it. But those days are mostly over.

Poor Dennis Kucinich had a much closer and much more definitive observation along with Shirley MacClaine, and went public. I think MacClaine actually outed him by describing the event in some interview. It ended his political career just saying yes, he saw that.
