MEXICO CITY (AP) - Leftist Mexico City Mayor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced Monday that he will resign on July 31 to run for president, saying he plans to embark on a whistle-stop campaign across the country.
The mayor, who leads polls on the 2006 presidential race, said he will run on a platform of "a new social pact, with more justice and less inequality," and that he will not use Mexico City funds on his campaign, though he will convert the citizens' committees that helped him stay in office into campaign committees.
"I have decided to participate in the primary elections, to represent my party, should voters so decide, as candidate for the presidency," Lopez Obrador said in an announcement that had been widely expected since the government dropped charges against him in an obscure land case last week.
"We are going to fight for new laws, a new economy, a new form of politics," he told a news conference.
Lopez Obrador said he was certain he would have no further legal problems with his candidacy, noting his supporters had turned out by the hundreds of thousands to support him in the previous legal battle, in which he was accused of ignoring a court order.
"You shouldn't mess with the people, because the people are tough," Lopez Obrador told his daily news conference, noting he seeks a system where "there is no separation between the people and the government."
