A problem about hitting a mass up into the air has disappeared from the intro physics homework. It was a bit of a train wreck, but the OP was replying and perhaps was willing to work on it.

Happy New Year.

I saw it and I remember thinking that the original question was incoherent. Didn't follow it after that but can't be too surprising that it went downhill from there.

But it was heading uphill, not downhill. It was going to be a challenge, but the OP was engaging with replies from me and @jbriggs444 . There was genuine effort. It’s disappointing that just because someone is confused they aren’t given a chance.

In that case it's odd that it got deleted. Maybe he posted something you didn't see and THAT caused the deletion?

That was my impression as well. I was about to try to shift the focus away from "acceleration" and introduce the concept of "impulse" but *poof*, the thread was gone.

However, I trust the mentors here. If it is gone, there is likely a good reason.

Could be. I mean, it was a poorly constructed problem statement that showed severe conceptual confusion, so they did have just cause in that alone. I just was excited to see something - perhaps a bit too willing to polish a turd! Has it been slow around here or is that still just me?

It is not just you. It seems like there is a dearth of eager young minds thirsting for the knowledge that we yearn to impart.

I took a quick look in Intro Physics and didn't see the thread. Do you remember the title, and was it for sure in Intro Physics and not another forum?

If I recall, it was moved from technical to schoolwork forum last night. But that was before I replied to it.

Thanks, that screenshot was a big help. It looks like that new member @Tristangold was banned as a spammer. They either posted some link spam in their thread, or possibly started a new thread with their spam. We have a special mechanism for banning spammers, and that mechanism wipes their threads and much of their history. If you hadn't captured their username in that screenshot, I don't think we would have been able to figure out what happened.

If I'm about to ban someone as a spammer, I will usually try (if I have time) to notify any other folks in the thread who have replied to that poster. In this case that didn't happen, hence your confusion.

Have you noticed a decrease since chatgpt? It has become quite popular as a homework assistant. It's actually pretty good at electromagnetism. It's still far less good at mechanics.

Also, schools are still on break. I'm sure I will have homework questions when the semester starts again.
