Considering how many students here ask for advice on applying for REUs and other student research opportunities, has anyone ever put together a resume template for that sort of application? I would definitely appreciate it, and I'm sure plenty of other people would, also.

When I applied for an REU as an undergrad, I took the opportunity to TeX my first CV. Over the years, I've added to it, but it's more or less the same format I used way back then.

I did the same as Geezer. I can send my template to anyone who's interested.

FAQ: Applying for REUs and Student Research Opportunities: A Resume Template

What is an REU?

An REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) is a program funded by the National Science Foundation that provides opportunities for undergraduate students to participate in research projects at universities or other research institutions. These programs typically last for 8-10 weeks during the summer and allow students to gain hands-on research experience in their field of interest.

How can I find REU opportunities?

There are several ways to find REU opportunities. You can search for programs on the National Science Foundation's website or on other resources such as the Pathways to Science website. Your university's career center or department may also have information on available REU programs. Additionally, networking with professors and graduate students in your field can help you learn about potential research opportunities.

What is the purpose of a resume when applying for REUs?

A resume is a document that summarizes your education, work experience, skills, and accomplishments. When applying for REUs, a resume is typically required to demonstrate your qualifications and experiences that make you a strong candidate for the program. It is important to tailor your resume to the specific research opportunity you are applying for and highlight relevant experiences and skills.

What should I include in my resume for REUs?

When creating a resume for REUs, you should include your contact information, education, relevant coursework, research experience, technical skills, and any relevant work experience. You can also include any publications, presentations, or awards that demonstrate your academic and research achievements. Be sure to also include any relevant extracurricular activities, such as clubs or organizations related to your field of interest.

Is there a specific format to follow when creating a resume for REUs?

While there is no one specific format for a resume, it is important to keep it organized and easy to read. Use clear headings and bullet points to highlight your experiences and skills. Keep your resume concise and limit it to one page if possible. It is also important to proofread your resume for any spelling or grammatical errors before submitting it.
