In summary, Heavyside's operational calculus and transforms are mathematical techniques used to solve differential equations, particularly in engineering and physics. Heavyside's operational calculus focuses on manipulating differential operators algebraically, allowing for straightforward solutions through a set of operational rules. In contrast, transforms, such as the Laplace and Fourier transforms, convert functions into a different domain (frequency or complex) to simplify analysis and solve equations more easily. While both approaches are powerful, operational calculus emphasizes algebraic manipulation, whereas transforms provide a broader framework for analysis, including spectral properties.

Are there features of operational calculus (or operator methods) that are advantageous over transforms for DE? I know that the techniques are closely related.

I’ve been poking around all day. I think I have convinced myself that there are situations where operation calculus would be useful.

I even found a great quote:
“Even Cambridge mathematicians deserve justice” -O. Heavyside
