Are UFOs or Mass Hysteria Behind Mysterious Deaths in India?

But not all scientists are convinced by this explanation. Prof Arora, a specialist in high-voltage electricity, told the Times of India: "Some say it is the plasma state of gas, while others attribute it to a slowly burning gas... radiation from long-lived meta stable state of air particles or a sphere of heated air at atmospheric pressure... an air vortex (like smoke rings) that contain luminous gases." Rajeev Sharma, a spokesman for the Indian Air Force, told Ananova that the organisation was sceptical about the existence of aliens, but has sent a team of experts to investigate

UFO sightings have sparked hysteria and riots, says our reporter

A MYSTERIOUS flying object said to attack sleeping villagers has sparked mass hysteria and rioting across the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

Police shot dead one man and injured 12 others when a mob of hundreds stormed the police station in Barabanki, demanding protection against what they believe is an alien assailant terrorising villages.

The object, described as a flying sphere emitting red and blue light, is said to strike in the middle of the night, leaving victims with burns or scratches on their faces and limbs, and earning it the name the muhnochwa (face-scratcher).

At least seven unexplained deaths in the area have been attributed to the muhnochwa, sparking panic among villagers who blame police for not providing enough protection.

"More often than not the victims have unconsciously inflicted the symptoms themselves," AP quoted Narrotam Lal, a doctor at King George's Medical College in Lucknow, the state capital, as saying.

Music companies in India are cashing in on a recent UFO scare.

LUCKNOW: With five visuals of what is feared as the muhnochwa `trapped' on video tapes -- three of which were recorded by the team of intelligence sleuths in the state -- the scare does not seem to be unfounded. The sleuths who had worked on muhnochwa do not rule out the possibility of the presence of an extra-terrestrial body (ETB) with electro-magnetic (EM) effect in at least three per cent of the cases. While the Indian agencies were yet to admit the presence of ETB, foreign research agencies, intelligence reports said, have already been to the affected areas, met the victims and collected necessary data.

Sources said that after going through the video tape provided by the wife of a lawyer in Mirzapur and another frame recorded by a resident in Sitapur...

Out of a sample study of 100 injured victims, 10 were found to be victims of an insect bite or scratch. Another 10 suffered the injuries indirectly (like bruises while running after a scare in the night). The remaining had one or more of the following four common factors: Experiencing electric shock, seeing sharp light, feeling hard oval object.

Great report mouseonmoon!

I have only briefly reviewed what's posted so far but a couple of comments on the scientific explanation seem to be in order.

"But in all cases people can see a ball-like object traveling sideways in the air that can produce up to 100 watts of current and emit red, blue, yellow or green lights," he said.

1). Current is not measured in watts. This does not inspire confidence.

2). What is ball lightning? How is it made? Where's the evidence to support this explanation? This is a name, not an explanation.

Edit: you may want to check your links. the NBC link didn't work.

Edit: Ah, you feel they may have been deleted?

Yeah=some 'wild' explanations going on by the 'experts'.
Noticed some of the links not working 'here'=yet some i can still get?...have eveything copied...so,may have to post some xcerts

1sr report Aug 10th--solved Aug 15th! --(did he 'catch one'?-or someone sent it to him in a jar?...like the 'bug' solution?...don't think he got out of his chair to solve this---sounds like a bunch of these 'balls' got together about 30 years ago in Iran (know what i mean?)
The 'ball-lighting' theory is interesting though:
According to Prof Arora, a specialist in high-voltage electricity, "dry spells increase the soil resistance while decreasing it conductivity, and in the process attract lightning balls that emit different colour lights -- mostly blue, green, yellow or red."

"The phenomena of lightning balls is older than the life on Earth and there was constant evidence of these balls over the ages... while reports on it were received from different parts of USA and Europe, the highest frequency was reported from New Zealand."

"Some [scientists] say it is the plasma state of gas, while others attribute it to a slowly burning gas... radiation from long-lived meta stable state of air particles or a sphere of heated air at atmospheric pressure... an air vortex (like smoke rings) that contain luminous gases."

((desert swamp gas or just big 'lightning bugs'--really big 'fire-flies'?))
Or, is this all another "Monkey Man" story?

quotes:
Officials have suggested a raft of explanations, from an alien invasion to a new and unknown breed of insect.

Perhaps the most bizarre theory was that of Police Deputy Inspector General K. N. D. Dwivedi, who said that the assailant was a genetically engineered insect introduced by “anti-national elements” from outside India to cause mayhem.

In common Indian parlance, this is taken to mean that it was the work of the Pakistani spy agency, the universal scapegoat for all unexplained Indian woes. That theory has not won over many believers.

Residents have dismantled television aerials and taken satellite dishes down from their roofs, fearing that they may attract the mysterious object. Even radios have fallen silent at night under selfimposed blackout.

Seems to have been 'pranksters' about too--the 'convergence' of 'stories' and explanations is really bizzarre=UFOs,but not yer typical ETs in Flying Saucers!
