Art Conservation: A Scientific Perspective

In summary, art conservation is the practice of preserving and restoring artwork using scientific methods and techniques. It involves understanding the materials and processes used in creating the art, as well as the environmental factors that can damage or degrade it. Through careful examination and analysis, conservators are able to devise conservation treatments that will prolong the life of the artwork and maintain its aesthetic integrity. The field of art conservation continues to evolve and utilize new technologies, but its ultimate goal remains the same: to protect and preserve our cultural heritage for future generations.

Hello. I am new to this discussion forum and look forward to reading and taking part in what is going on here. I trained in Germany and Switzerland and have worked most of my life in the field of art conservation. Although most may think that this is a purely artistic pursuit, there is a great deal of physics and chemistry involved in restoring a painting or other work of art. I look forward to answering questions and to taking part in discussions on various topics.
