British Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics Competition

In summary, The speaker is excited to participate in the British Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics Competition, but feels they could have done better on the British Physics Olympiad Paper. They are new to these topics and want to study them more, and are looking for free resources to do so. They are also open to more advanced materials and are willing to put in extra effort to learn. They are wondering if there are any additional subjects they need to study, and are open to tips and suggestions. They are also considering looking at sample exams from the Indian Astronomy Olympiad.

So I've been told recently, that I will be participating in the "British Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics Competition", which I am really excited about. I took the British Physics Olympiad Paper earlier this year, and feel like I could've done better. So because I am quite new to Astronomy and Astrophysics, I would like to study both topics, to see what they are all about. I've been wanting to do this for quite some time now, and think this is the right time to ask:
I am wondering if there are any good books/ online guides/ or other material (for free..) which would help me learn more about these broad topics. Keep in mind that i am currently in 9th Grade, so I would prefer a book/resource which material isn't too high above my skill/knowledge level ,However I am always open to more 'advanced' books/resources and will consider these, so please do mention them.

Also, are there any other things(e.g. Mathematics) I would have to read up on?
Any other tips/suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks in advance.

FAQ: British Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics Competition

What is the British Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics Competition (BOAA)?

The BOAA is an annual national competition for students in the UK who have an interest in astronomy and astrophysics. It is organized by the Royal Astronomical Society and the UK Space Agency, and aims to challenge and inspire young minds in these fields.

Who can participate in the BOAA?

The competition is open to students in the UK who are in their final two years of secondary education (Year 12 and 13). It is also open to students who are home-schooled or studying outside of the UK, as long as they are within the appropriate age range.

How can I prepare for the BOAA?

The BOAA follows the curriculum of A-level physics and is designed to test students' understanding and problem-solving skills in astronomy and astrophysics. To prepare, students can study the relevant topics in their physics textbooks, practice past papers, and participate in astronomy clubs or societies.

What is the format of the BOAA?

The BOAA consists of two rounds: the preliminary round and the final round. The preliminary round is a multiple-choice test that can be taken online or on paper, and the final round is a challenging written exam that takes place at a designated test center. Both rounds cover a range of topics in astronomy and astrophysics.

What are the benefits of participating in the BOAA?

Aside from the opportunity to test their knowledge and skills in astronomy and astrophysics, participating in the BOAA can also lead to recognition and awards. The top-performing students in the final round are invited to attend a summer school at the University of Oxford or the University of Cambridge. Additionally, the BOAA is recognized by universities and can enhance a student's application for higher education in related fields.
