In summary, the conversation discusses the process of calculating the molecular weight of an unknown acid by titrating it with 2N H2PO4 and 2N NaOH. The equation ph = pka + log[a-]/[ha] is mentioned, as well as a graph of titration with equivalents used vs. pH. The question of how to use the number of equivalents and total number of inflections in the curve is raised, and the suggestion to convert Normality to Molarity is made. However, more information is needed to determine the molar mass of the acid, such as the specific question and given data.

Homework Statement

Calculate the molecular weight of unknown acid by titrating with 2N H2PO4 and 2N NaOH

Homework Equations

ph = pka + log[a-]/[ha]

The Attempt at a Solution

So i graphed titration with both acid and base with equivalents used vs ph, how would i use the number of equivalents (and total number of inflections in curve) to get molecular weight?

Not enough data. Please explain what the question is and what is the data that you are given. Or are you asked to design a procedure for determining molar mass of the acid?

FAQ: Calculate mw of unknown using titration

What is titration?

Titration is a laboratory technique used to determine the concentration of a substance in a solution by adding a known amount of another substance of known concentration until the reaction is complete.

What is the purpose of calculating the molecular weight of an unknown using titration?

The purpose of calculating the molecular weight of an unknown using titration is to determine the identity of the unknown substance. By knowing the molecular weight, we can determine the chemical formula and potentially the properties of the substance.

What equipment is needed for titration?

The equipment needed for titration includes a burette, pipette, Erlenmeyer flask, and a titrant solution of known concentration. Other equipment such as a pH meter, indicator, and balance may also be used depending on the specific titration procedure.

What is the equation used to calculate the molecular weight of an unknown using titration?

The equation used to calculate the molecular weight of an unknown using titration is MW = (C x V x N)/m, where MW is the molecular weight, C is the concentration of the titrant, V is the volume of the titrant used, N is the normality of the titrant, and m is the mass of the unknown substance.

What are some sources of error in titration and how can they be minimized?

Some sources of error in titration include inaccurate measurements, improper mixing, and human error in determining the endpoint. These errors can be minimized by using precise and calibrated equipment, performing multiple trials, and ensuring proper technique is used throughout the titration process.
