In summary, the problem involves finding the displacement and distance traveled of a particle based on a given equation and time intervals. The total distance traveled between 0 and 10 seconds is 40m, while the change in displacement is -25m. It is important to carefully consider the wording of the problem to accurately solve it.

1. Homework Statement
the following is a equation to find the displacement of a particle. I've found it is instantaneous at rest at t=5. now need to find the distance traveled between 0 to 10s.

i found distance traveling between 0 to 5 s is 7.5

and between 5s to 10s is 32.5...so how come total distance is 32.5 instead of 32.5+7.5=40m?

2. Homework Equations

s=0.7t^2-0.1t^3+0.5t

3. The Attempt at a Solution

32.5m

Your calculation of 40 is correct for total distance covered. Are you sure you have stated the problem correctly? Sometimes such problems are worded in such a way that the answer is the change in displacement, which in this case would be -24.5 - .5 = -25. Are you sure it didn't ask for how far did it travel after it momentarily stopped?

FAQ: Calculating Total Distance Traveled: A Particle's Displacement Equation

What is total distance travelled?

Total distance travelled is the sum of all the distances covered during a specific period of time, regardless of direction or route.

How is total distance travelled calculated?

Total distance travelled is calculated by adding up all the individual distances travelled, whether it be by car, plane, or on foot. This can be measured using a variety of tools such as odometers, GPS devices, or pedometers.

Why is total distance travelled important?

Total distance travelled is important for a variety of reasons. It can be used to track progress, monitor physical activity, or calculate fuel consumption. It can also be used in scientific studies to analyze patterns and trends in movement.

What factors can affect total distance travelled?

There are many factors that can affect total distance travelled, such as mode of transportation, route taken, weather conditions, and physical abilities. Other factors may include time constraints, traffic, and road closures.

How can total distance travelled be optimized?

Total distance travelled can be optimized by planning efficient routes, utilizing public transportation or carpooling, and choosing physical activities that are enjoyable and sustainable. Technology, such as mapping apps, can also aid in optimizing total distance travelled.
