Calculating Velocity after Skateboard Jump - A Physics Problem

In summary, Dan is gliding on his skateboard at 3.00m/s and suddenly jumps off, kicking the skateboard forward at 6.00m/s. With Dan's mass at 40.0kg and the skateboard's mass at 5.00kg, the question is asking for how fast Dan is going when his feet hit the ground. Using the equation vf-vi=vexplosion*ln(mf/mi), with vi=3 m/s, mi=45 kg, and mf of dan=40 kg, the initial speed of the explosion (vexplosion) is assumed to be 6 m/s. However, this assumption results in a wrong answer of 2.29 m/s, while the correct

Homework Statement

Dan is gliding on his skateboard at 3.00m/s . He suddenly jumps backward off the skateboard, kicking the skateboard forward at 6.00m/s (as measured by an observer on the ground). Dan's mass is 40.0kg and the skateboard's mass is 5.00kg . How fast is Dan going as his feet hit the ground?

Homework Equations

vf-vi=vexplosion*ln(mf/mi)

The Attempt at a Solution

vi=3 m/s
mi=45 kg
mf of dan=40 kg
I used 6 m/s as vex
when I plugged the above in the equation to find vf I got 2.29 which was marked wrong. Is it wrong to use 6m/s for Vex?

The correct answer is 2.63 m/s, but I'm still confused on the process to get the answer

FAQ: Calculating Velocity after Skateboard Jump - A Physics Problem

1. What is explosive force?

Explosive force is the sudden release of energy that results in a powerful and rapid movement. In skateboarding, explosive force is used to perform tricks and jumps.

2. How is explosive force generated in skateboarding?

Explosive force in skateboarding is generated through the use of muscle power and momentum. Skateboarders use their leg muscles to push down on the board and generate speed, and then use their upper body to create momentum and lift off the ground for tricks.

3. What factors affect the explosive force in skateboarding?

The main factors that affect explosive force in skateboarding are the speed and momentum of the skateboarder, the angle and force of the push, and the surface and texture of the ground or ramp being used.

4. Can explosive force be controlled in skateboarding?

Yes, skilled skateboarders are able to control and manipulate explosive force to perform various tricks and stunts. This requires a combination of physical strength, coordination, and technique.

5. Is explosive force dangerous in skateboarding?

Like any physical activity, there is always a risk of injury when performing explosive movements in skateboarding. It is important for skateboarders to wear proper safety gear and to practice and master techniques before attempting more advanced tricks that require explosive force.
