Calculating Width of SM Higgs Two-Photon Channel

In summary, the conversation discusses a question about calculating the width of the two-photon channel of the SM Higgs, which involves a tedious calculation with dimensional regularization and two one-loop contributions. The speaker also mentions trouble with the two-gluon channel and suggests referencing the Higgs Hunter's Guide for intermediate steps. They also inquire about any progress made in the last few weeks.

Hello!
I would like to know how to calculate the width of the two-photon channel of the SM Higgs. It seems to be quite a tedious calculation with a dimensional regularization to perform. There are two one-loop contributions (leptons and W). Thank you very much in advance for your help!

I had too much trouble dealing with the two-gluon channel to go on to the two-photon decay. I remember that the Higgs Hunter's Guide had some intermediate steps in this calculation, though. Have you made any progress in the last few weeks?

FAQ: Calculating Width of SM Higgs Two-Photon Channel

How is the width of the SM Higgs two-photon channel calculated?

The width of the SM Higgs two-photon channel is calculated using the formula: Γ(H→γγ) = (GFα2mH3)/(128√2π) * |Cγγ|2, where Γ is the decay width, GF is the Fermi constant, α is the fine-structure constant, mH is the mass of the Higgs boson, and Cγγ is the coupling constant between the Higgs boson and the photons.

What is the significance of calculating the width of the SM Higgs two-photon channel?

The width of the SM Higgs two-photon channel is an important parameter in understanding the properties of the Higgs boson. It provides information about the strength of the interaction between the Higgs boson and the photons, which is crucial for testing the Standard Model of particle physics.

How does the width of the SM Higgs two-photon channel compare to other decay channels?

The width of the SM Higgs two-photon channel is relatively small compared to other decay channels, such as Higgs to b-quark pairs. This is because the Higgs boson has a weak coupling to photons, resulting in a lower probability of decaying into two photons compared to other decay modes.

Are there any experimental methods used to measure the width of the SM Higgs two-photon channel?

Yes, there are several experimental methods used to measure the width of the SM Higgs two-photon channel. These include the direct measurement of the decay width by analyzing the data from particle colliders, as well as indirect methods such as studying the properties of the Higgs boson in other decay channels.

Can the width of the SM Higgs two-photon channel be modified by new physics?

Yes, the width of the SM Higgs two-photon channel can be modified by the presence of new physics beyond the Standard Model. This can be seen by comparing the measured width to the predicted value from the Standard Model. Any deviation could indicate the presence of new particles or interactions that affect the decay of the Higgs boson into two photons.
