In summary, it is possible to create a permanent magnet with a 'pulling power' of greater than 600 pounds that is also light enough to move around without much hassle or the use of any apparatus.

Dear All,

A confused fellow from the old United Kingdom here.
I have a question regarding magnetism. Is it possible to create a magnet that will have a 'pulling power' of greater that 600 pounds? I am not asking regarding the Electro-magnets. The magnet in question should also be able light enough to physically move around without much hassle and use of any aparatus.

Please do help!

regards.

It is possible to make a permanent magnet big enough to carry another magnet (or something that can be magnetized) with a weight of 600 pounds, sure. It won't be very practical but it is possible.

FAQ: Can a Portable Permanent Magnet Have a Pulling Power Over 600 Pounds?

What is magnetism?

Magnetism is a physical phenomenon that describes the force of attraction or repulsion between objects that have a magnetic field. It is caused by the motion of electric charges, such as electrons.

How does magnetism work?

Magnetism works by the alignment of magnetic particles within an object. These particles have a north and south pole, and when they are in close proximity to each other, their opposite poles attract and their like poles repel.

What are the two types of magnets?

The two types of magnets are permanent magnets and electromagnets. Permanent magnets are made of materials that are naturally magnetic, such as iron, and retain their magnetism without the need for an external electric current. Electromagnets are created by passing an electric current through a wire coiled around a magnetic material, and can be turned on and off.

How is magnetism used in everyday life?

Magnetism is used in various ways in everyday life. Some common uses include in speakers and headphones, as the electric current creates a magnetic field that causes vibrations in the speaker cone and produces sound. Magnets are also used in credit and debit cards, with a magnetic strip that stores important information. Magnetic compasses use the Earth's magnetic field to determine direction, and refrigerators use magnets to seal and keep the door closed.

Can magnetism be harmful to humans?

In general, magnetism is not harmful to humans. However, strong magnetic fields, such as those used in MRI machines, can have potential negative effects on pacemakers and other medical devices. It is important to follow safety precautions when working with strong magnets and to consult a doctor before undergoing any medical procedures involving strong magnetic fields.
