In summary, the LM555 and NE555 timers are essentially the same and can be used interchangeably in a PWM circuit. However, some modifications may be necessary if using a CMOS version. Both Jaycar and Altronics carry the NE555 in Australia.

Homework Statement

Hi, I am trying to make a PWM circuit that calls for a LM555 timer but I only have easy access to NE555 timers (In Australia) and am wondering if it will suffice??

Thanks for any help, circuit found here: http://www.rmcybernetics.com/projects/DIY_Devices/homemade_signal_generator2.htm

The prefix is partly determined by the name of the manufacturer.

See the list on this site:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LM555
Many manufacturers make a version of the 555.

There are various CMOS versions which use different voltages to the LM555 and NE555 so you would have to modify the circuit to use them.

For your query, though, the LM555 and the NE555 are essentially the same.

I see Jaycar and Altronics both carry the NE555. (I'm in Perth).

FAQ: Can I use an NE555 timer instead of an LM555?

What is the main difference between NE555 and LM555 timers?

The main difference between NE555 and LM555 timers is the manufacturer. NE555 is manufactured by several companies, while LM555 is manufactured solely by Texas Instruments. However, they both function in the same way and have similar specifications.

Can I use NE555 timer in place of LM555 in my circuit?

Yes, you can use NE555 timer in place of LM555 in your circuit. They have the same pinout and perform the same function, so they are interchangeable. The only difference may be in the tolerances and temperature ranges, so it is important to check the datasheet for your specific application.

Is the pin configuration the same for NE555 and LM555?

Yes, the pin configuration is the same for NE555 and LM555. Both timers have 8 pins and follow the same pinout: GND, TRIG, OUT, RESET, CTRL, THR, DIS, VCC.

Which one is more commonly used in electronic circuits, NE555 or LM555?

Both NE555 and LM555 timers are commonly used in electronic circuits. However, LM555 may be more commonly used due to its availability and reputation as a reliable timer. It is always best to check the datasheet and choose the timer that best fits your specific needs.

Is there any significant price difference between NE555 and LM555?

There may be a slight price difference between NE555 and LM555 timers, but it will vary depending on the manufacturer and distributor. In general, LM555 may be slightly more expensive due to its reputation as a reliable timer. It is always best to compare prices from different sources before purchasing.
