CANADA AND THE NEW AMERICAN EMPIRE 4 part series, Monday December 6, 2004 to Thursday December 9, 2004 at 8pm ET on CBC Newsworld
CANADA AND THE NEW AMERICAN EMPIRE, hosted by award-winning journalist Diana Swain, will take viewers on a journey examining Canada-U.S. relationships, and ask hard and irreverent questions about future integration.
Part one of the series features two documentaries. The first looks at a cross-border water diversion project, originating in Devil’s Lake, North Dakota, and how it signals potential danger for the fishery in Lake Winnipeg, Man. The second documentary is about the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline development, and what it could mean for the environment and the people of the Northwest, and for the future of Canada’s oil patch.
Part two also features two documentaries. The first looks at how the new post-Sept. 11 national security state comes across the border to Canada and causes an increase in detentions and deportations, and the emergence of what some call “secret trials”. The second documentary asks what Canada’s hog industry should expect, as trade and economic integration of the Canadian and U.S. economies is slapped with a wake-up call in the form of a 14 per cent U.S. tariff on hog imports from Canada.
Part three of CANADA AND THE NEW AMERICAN EMPIRE visits a conference on Canada-U.S. relations at the University of Victoria’s Centre for Global Studies. Is there a case for changing the relationship between Canada and the U.S.?
And part four is a special live town-hall debate, featuring U.S. guests and a studio audience. Will deeper Canada-U.S. integration help or hinder our futures?
