What is "Capt Kirk's Virgin flight"?

"Capt Kirk's Virgin flight" refers to the first suborbital space flight conducted by Virgin Galactic's spacecraft VSS Unity on July 11, 2021. The flight was piloted by Sir Richard Branson and carried several other passengers, including actor William Shatner who played Captain Kirk in the Star Trek franchise.

Why is it called "Virgin flight"?

The term "Virgin" in the name refers to Virgin Galactic, the spaceflight company founded by Sir Richard Branson. The company aims to provide commercial space tourism experiences to the general public.

What is the significance of the hot pepper?

The hot pepper was included in the flight as a nod to a tradition in the Virgin Galactic team, where they would eat a hot pepper before every test flight. This tradition was started by a member of the team who believed that the heat of the pepper would help them overcome any challenges during the flight.

What does the suborbital flight mean?

A suborbital flight is a type of spaceflight where the spacecraft reaches the edge of space, but does not complete a full orbit around the Earth. In the case of "Capt Kirk's Virgin flight", the spacecraft reached an altitude of 53.5 miles (86.1 kilometers) above the Earth's surface before returning back to land.

How does this flight contribute to the future of space tourism?
