CHEMISTRY - Calculating Copper Yield from Bornite Ore

In summary, a chemical reaction is a process that transforms reactants into different products through the breaking and forming of chemical bonds. There are six main types of chemical reactions, which are determined by the type of reactants and products involved. To balance a chemical equation, the number of atoms of each element must be equal on both sides. The rate of a chemical reaction can be affected by various factors such as temperature, concentration, and presence of a catalyst. Stoichiometry is the calculation of reactants and products in a chemical reaction based on the law of conservation of mass.

Homework Statement

3) Bornite, Cu3FeS3, is an ore used in the production of copper. If 2.5kg of bornite produced a 60% yield, how much copper was collected?

2 Cu3FeS3(s) + 7 O2(g) ---> 6 Cu(s) + 2 FeO(s) + 6SO2(g)

The Attempt at a Solution

So first I calculated the moles of Cu3Fes3 and got about 7.3 moles. Then I am not sure what to do. Any suggestions?

FAQ: CHEMISTRY - Calculating Copper Yield from Bornite Ore

What is a chemical reaction?

A chemical reaction is a process in which one or more substances (reactants) are transformed into one or more new substances (products) with different properties. This transformation involves breaking and forming chemical bonds between atoms.

What are the types of chemical reactions?

The main types of chemical reactions are synthesis, decomposition, single displacement, double displacement, combustion, and acid-base reactions. These are classified based on the type of reactants and products involved in the reaction.

How do you balance a chemical equation?

To balance a chemical equation, you need to make sure that the number of atoms of each element on the reactant side is equal to the number of atoms of that element on the product side. This can be achieved by adjusting the coefficients in front of each compound in the equation.

What factors can affect the rate of a chemical reaction?

The rate of a chemical reaction can be affected by factors such as temperature, concentration of reactants, presence of a catalyst, surface area of reactants, and pressure (for reactions involving gases). These factors can either increase or decrease the rate of the reaction.

What is stoichiometry in chemistry?

Stoichiometry is the calculation of the quantities of reactants and products involved in a chemical reaction. It is based on the law of conservation of mass, which states that matter cannot be created or destroyed in a chemical reaction. Stoichiometry is used to determine the amount of products that can be obtained from a given amount of reactants, and vice versa.
