Dealing with Stomach Ache & Vomiting: My Experience

In summary, the person experienced horrendous stomach ache, vomiting every half hour or so, and felt fine until 10 this morning. They think it was caused by a flu but don't know for sure. They suggest drinking chicken broth and eating rice or pasta, and putting crushed ice in drinks if it's food poisoning.

I just spent last night with a horrendous stomach ache, vomiting every half hour or so. The stomach ache started around 6 and got progressively worse until my first vomit around 8. I thought that was it until 10 when they started happening frequently. It kept on going until 10 this morning, when i was finally able to get some sleep. I actually threw up in the middle of calling in sick.

Right now I'm feeling fine, thankfully (it's 2:00 pm), except for an empty stomach, which I'm afraid to put anything in, and a very coarse throat. I can't even drink water without it feeling like it's scraping my throat out.

Poor smurf!

Nausea is the worst. I'm glad you're feeling better, but you probably feel like you've been wrung inside out. :frown:

Yeah pretty much. I'm hoping some tea will help that. I don't even know what it was that caused it though, I'm guessing some kind of flu, but I don't feel well enough to walk the five blocks to the UVic clinic.

Oooh, I'd like some california rolls right now. Uhm, Walmart sells pimiento cheese sushi during the holidays. It's not bad if you like seaweed wrapped pimiento cheese.

Sorry Smurf, you'e probably still queasy.

Ooooh, a melted sardine sandwich.

You split the sardines in half lengthwise and lay them on top of a slice of bread, place a slice of swiss cheese over them and run under the broiler until bubbly. Dot with fresh homemade ranch dressing. :!):!):!)

I've experienced something similar a few months ago and it lasted for one day only, thank god. I hope you get better quickly.

Years ago, I attended a party with my future brother-in-law and he got into the beer a bit too much, went outside and started vomiting. I needed to drive him home, so I waited until he was settled down and asked if he would be OK to ride home. He said he'd be fine and made some apologetic comment for getting sick. I said "No wonder you were sick! Your stomach was full of puke!" That started him on a pretty heavy round of dry heaves, but at least my father's car didn't get puked in when we finally went home. That was 35 years ago, and he hasn't forgotten.

BTW, sudden violent illnesses like this are usually food poisoning, not viral infections. Avoid salad bars (ESPECIALLY in food stores with produce departments) and buffet tables.

Yep, sounds likely to be food poisoning to have started about dinner time and continued all night, especially if it's mostly just vomiting and not other signs of illness like fever or coughing/sneezing.

Do you have any plain chicken broth around? And some sort of pasta or rice? Put a little pasta or rice into the chicken broth and sip it slowly. It'll get just a little solid food in plus the broth nutrients. Any warm liquids will also help soothe your raw throat after the vomiting. I wouldn't try much more daring than a little rice or pasta or plain crackers until your stomach has had a little more time to settle. If you want to just feel like you're eating something without actually challenging your stomach with solid food yet, you can crunch on some crushed ice.

As your stomach settles a bit more, try some oatmeal or toast and see how that goes. Basically, start out with starchy things, and if they stay down, start trying other bland foods. And if it's food poisoning, the best thing you can do is just let it work itself out...don't try to prevent the vomiting. If you don't feel better by tomorrow, have someone drive you to the clinic. Even 5 blocks is a long walk when you're feeling that sick.

Feel better soon!

If you can keep that down, you're on the way to recovery. In the morning, make up a batch of oatmeal or cream of wheat in the morning (be sure to use salt because you need to be re-hydrated), or perhaps a poached egg on dry toast (with some salt to help you retain some of the water you lost) and eat it slowly. You'll pull out of it. Good luck, and go see a doctor if you don't pull out in a day or so.
