Does Battery Internal Resistance Vary with External Resistance?

In summary, the internal resistance of a battery or other source is not variable and does not depend on external resistance. It is typically constant over one discharge cycle, but can increase with battery ageing and decrease in colder temperatures. The internal resistance is not affected by other circuit configurations, as long as the current drawn is within normal ratings. This information is based on experiments done in a school lab.

No, the internal resistance of a battery is not variable.. and it also does not depend on the external resistance.

Probably depends on battery chemistry, design, temperature, and state of charge.

The internal resistance is normally taken as sensibly constant over one cycle of the normal discharge range of current.

The internal resistance does, however increase with ageing of the battery so the internal resistance after 500 cycles of a rechargeable has often increased enough to render the battery useless.

The internal resistance is independant of other circuit configurations, so long as the currents drawn are within the normal ratings.

The internal resistance increases with decreasing temperature, which is why it is harder to start a vehicle on a cold morning.

Is this a homework question?

No this is not home working question.
there is no information about the internal resistance in our course bot this question arise in mind and so i do it here

It's good to think around the subject. Hope my initial reply helped.

Related to Does Battery Internal Resistance Vary with External Resistance?

1. What is internal resistance in a source?

Internal resistance in a source refers to the inherent resistance of the source itself, such as a battery or power supply, to the flow of electric current. This resistance is caused by the materials and components used in the source and can affect the overall output and efficiency of the source.

2. How does internal resistance affect the performance of a source?

The internal resistance of a source can impact its performance in several ways. It can cause a drop in voltage and power output, leading to a decrease in the overall efficiency of the source. It can also cause the source to heat up and potentially damage its components. Additionally, internal resistance can affect the stability and reliability of the source's output.

3. What factors can affect the internal resistance of a source?

The internal resistance of a source can be influenced by several factors, including the type of materials and components used in the source, the temperature of the source, and the age and condition of the source. Factors such as the length and thickness of the source's wires and connections can also impact its internal resistance.

4. How can internal resistance be measured in a source?

Internal resistance can be measured in a source by using a multimeter, which is a tool that can measure electrical properties such as voltage, current, and resistance. To measure internal resistance, the multimeter is connected in series with the source, and the resulting voltage drop is used to calculate the internal resistance using Ohm's Law.

5. Can the internal resistance of a source be reduced?

The internal resistance of a source is a natural property of the source and cannot be completely eliminated. However, it can be reduced by using better quality materials and components, keeping the source at a lower temperature, and minimizing the length and thickness of wires and connections. Proper maintenance and replacement of aging components can also help to reduce internal resistance in a source.
