Closest thing to recreational swimming during my college in the '60s & '70s looked something like this:

When I was a the University of Florida (about a million years ago), in addition to an Olympic pool (but only an outdoor pool- this is, after all, Forida!) they had a recreational area belonging to the college on a nearby lake.

My University has a little known Marine Biology campus on an island about 15 miles off shore in the Pacific Ocean equipped with kayaks, snorkelling and scuba-diving gear - I think that trumps any water-park.
