This is a nice intro for people who are confused about what to study in grad school. Lots of us have had trouble making up our mind, due to having so many fascinating choices. Applied physics IMO seems like a middle way between pure physics and a specific engineering major. There are also PhD programs in Applied Physics. In any case, I would pick something that's fun for you and never gets boring, otherwise you will hate it and not do very well.
