Exploring the Galactic Magnetic Field: Methods, Models, and Discoveries

In summary, the conversation involved a request for references on determining the Galactic magnetic field for a monograph. Several methods were suggested, including the Faraday effect, Zeeman effect, and synchrotron radiation. The speaker also mentioned a book by Binney and Tremain and provided a link to a paper with maps of a proposed model for the galaxy's magnetic field.

Hi,

I need to write a monograph with about 30 pages about the topic: "Our Galaxy magnetic field.". I just need some indications about some good references about this, like the methods to determine de Galactic manetic field, some simple models.

I tried to find, but there are a lot of information, and as I have a short time to prepare it, I don't know where to start.

Perhaps someone knows some review about determining the Galactic magnetic field...

Well, thanks anyway.

There are several methods for determining the galactic magnetic field.

1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday_effect#Faraday_rotation_in_the_interstellar_medium" of pulsars as well)
2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeeman_effect" on emission and absorption lines.
3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synchrotron_radiation#Synchrotron_radiation_in_astronomy" (I'm not sure if this method is used much in the galaxy)There may be others I'm missing. I'd suggest that the next step in your research would be to look up Binney and Tremain's https://www.amazon.com/dp/0691084459/?tag=pfamazon01-20.

Here's one paper that I'm familiar with. There are maps of a proposed model for the galaxy's B field.

FAQ: Exploring the Galactic Magnetic Field: Methods, Models, and Discoveries

What is a galactic magnetic field?

A galactic magnetic field is a magnetic field that exists within a galaxy, such as our own Milky Way. It is created by the motion of charged particles, such as electrons and protons, within the galaxy.

How is a galactic magnetic field measured?

Galactic magnetic fields are measured using various techniques, including radio astronomy, X-ray observations, and measurements of polarized light. These methods allow scientists to map the strength and direction of the magnetic field within a galaxy.

What is the role of a galactic magnetic field in the formation of galaxies?

The exact role of galactic magnetic fields in the formation of galaxies is still not fully understood. However, it is believed that they play a crucial role in shaping the structure of galaxies and influencing the formation of stars and their distribution within the galaxy.

How do galactic magnetic fields affect space travel?

Galactic magnetic fields can have a significant impact on space travel, as they can affect the trajectory of spacecraft and cause disruptions in communication signals. Therefore, it is important for scientists to understand and map these fields to better plan and navigate space missions.

Can galactic magnetic fields be studied outside of our own galaxy?

Yes, galactic magnetic fields can be studied outside of our own galaxy. With the use of powerful telescopes and other instruments, scientists are able to observe and study magnetic fields in other galaxies, providing valuable insights into the nature and behavior of these fields in different environments.
