In summary, the conversation discusses amusing titles found in a catalogue of British Standards, including BS 6935-5:1988 on wheelchair tests, BS 7710-1 on urine absorbing aids, and BS 770-1 on chemical analysis of cheese. There is also a mention of ordering the standards to find out more, and a humorous comment about getting drunk before attempting to understand them.

I was looking through a catalogue of British Standards today, and found some rather amusing titles.

BS 6935-5:1988 Wheelchair tests. Methods for determination of overall dimensions, mass and turning space.

What would that be then, how to use a ruler?

BS 7710-1 - Urine absorbing aids. Vocabulary. Conditions of urinary incontinence.

Isn't anyone just a little bit curious about this one? I thought about ordering it just to find out, but I reckon I'll leave it to Danger (unless Moonbear is familiar with the standard?)

My personal favourite:

BS 770-1 - Methods for chemical analysis of cheese.

Can anyone find any others?

Let me get a couple more beers down the funnel and I'll get right on it.

I find it fascinating that there are specific standards for such specific topics, even something as seemingly simple as measuring the dimensions of a wheelchair. It just goes to show the level of detail and precision that goes into scientific research and development. And as for the urine absorbing aids standard, while it may seem comical, it serves an important purpose in ensuring the safety and effectiveness of these products for individuals with urinary incontinence.

As for the standard on chemical analysis of cheese, it highlights the importance of quality control and consistency in food production. It's interesting to see how even something as common as cheese has a specific set of guidelines for analysis and testing.

Overall, exploring these quirky British Standards serves as a reminder of the vast and varied world of scientific research and the attention to detail that goes into creating standards for various industries and products. It's a testament to the thoroughness and dedication of scientists and researchers in ensuring the safety, reliability, and quality of our daily lives.

FAQ: Exploring the Quirky World of British Standards

What are British Standards?

British Standards, also known as BS, are a set of guidelines and specifications developed by the British Standards Institution (BSI) to ensure quality, safety, and consistency in products, services, and systems in the UK. They cover a wide range of industries and are recognized globally.

Why are British Standards important?

British Standards are important because they provide a common set of guidelines and specifications for products and services, ensuring that they meet quality and safety standards. They also help to reduce trade barriers and promote international trade, as they are recognized globally.

How are British Standards developed?

British Standards are developed through a process of consultation and collaboration with industry experts, stakeholders, and the general public. The BSI has a rigorous process in place to ensure that all standards are relevant, up-to-date, and reflect the needs and expectations of the industry and society.

Are British Standards mandatory?

No, British Standards are not mandatory. However, they are often referenced in legislation, contracts, and procurement processes, making them a de facto requirement for many industries. Adhering to British Standards can also demonstrate due diligence and help to protect businesses from legal and financial risks.

What is the role of the BSI in British Standards?

The British Standards Institution (BSI) is the UK's national standards body and is responsible for developing and publishing British Standards. They also provide training, certification, and assessment services to help businesses and organizations comply with standards.
