Gravity Map of Earth: Have You Seen It?

In summary, the conversation discusses the concept of a gravity map of the Earth, specifically one that takes into account different features such as mountain ranges and oceans. The idea of the geoid, or the shape of the Earth's deformation from a perfect sphere, is also mentioned. Resources for further information on this topic are provided.

Has anyone ever drawn a gravity map of the Earth? i mean one that looks at mountain ranges,
Vallie's, oceans, and shows the gravity (topology), or the shape of the deformation from a perfect sphere.
edit, may be this should go in the Earth forum but i think it is more, gp.

FAQ: Gravity Map of Earth: Have You Seen It?

What is a gravity map of Earth?

A gravity map of Earth is a visual representation of the gravitational field surrounding the planet. It shows the variation in gravity at different points on Earth's surface, which is affected by factors such as the density and composition of the Earth's crust and mantle.

How is a gravity map of Earth created?

A gravity map of Earth is created by measuring the strength of the gravitational field at various points on the Earth's surface. This is done using specialized equipment such as satellites, aircraft, or ground-based instruments. The data collected is then processed and analyzed to create a visual representation of the gravity variations on Earth.

3. What is the purpose of a gravity map of Earth?

A gravity map of Earth has many purposes, including helping scientists better understand the structure and composition of the Earth's interior, mapping the distribution of resources such as oil and minerals, and aiding in navigation and geophysical exploration.

4. How accurate is a gravity map of Earth?

The accuracy of a gravity map of Earth depends on the methods and instruments used to collect the data. Generally, modern gravity mapping techniques can produce maps with accuracy up to 0.001 m/s². However, the accuracy can also vary depending on the resolution of the map and the level of detail captured.

5. Can a gravity map of Earth change over time?

Yes, a gravity map of Earth can change over time due to various factors such as changes in the Earth's surface, shifts in tectonic plates, and changes in the Earth's mass distribution. Therefore, it is important for scientists to update and refine gravity maps regularly to ensure their accuracy.
