In summary, the conversation is about someone seeking help with their education in pursuing a second degree. They are looking for a thorough overview of the hierarchy of knowledge in physics and recommendations for books to help them learn from basic Algebra to Quantum Mechanics and beyond. The conversation also includes a list of resources that may be helpful, including a website and various books on different topics in physics and mathematics.

I plan on continuing my education to pursue a second degree sometime soon, and I was wondering if some of the more brilliant and experienced academics here might be able to help me out. Essentially what I am looking for is a very thorough overview of the hierarchy of knowledges that physics adheres to in particular, however a general charting is acceptable as well. In addition to a formal hierarchy, I'm also looking for recommendations on books that would take me from basic Algebra all the way through QM and beyond.

I certainly do appreciate any contributions to my topic and my personal quest for knowledge. If my request is a bit vague I'll be glad to clarify, however I am trying to be succinct in order to prevent any confusion.

I actually just started making a list of topics/books yesterday. It needs some tweaking at the moment, but it should still be helpful. Just pick one or two books from each category starting from the top and you're set. I've italicized books that I recommend.

This list also contains topics I'd like to learn, so some sections can be omitted. You don't need Calculus /w Analysis if you dislike proofs, but it'll be worthwhile to take a look at it later in your education. Matlab is good for making graphs (you can purchase a student edition for $100) but can be ignored until upper level classes. Engineering Statics & Dynamics and Mechanics of Materials are engineering topics.

FAQ: Hierarchy of Knowledge/Continued Education

What is the Hierarchy of Knowledge?

The Hierarchy of Knowledge is a concept that describes the levels of understanding and expertise within a specific subject or field. It typically includes four levels: data, information, knowledge, and wisdom. Data refers to raw facts and figures, while information is the organized and structured interpretation of that data. Knowledge is the understanding and application of information, and wisdom is the ability to use knowledge in a meaningful and ethical way.

Why is continued education important in the Hierarchy of Knowledge?

Continued education is important in the Hierarchy of Knowledge because it allows individuals to continuously expand their understanding and expertise within a specific subject or field. It helps to keep knowledge and skills up-to-date and relevant in a rapidly changing world. Continued education also allows individuals to move up the hierarchy from data to wisdom, by gaining a deeper understanding and ability to apply knowledge in a meaningful way.

How can one advance in the Hierarchy of Knowledge?

One can advance in the Hierarchy of Knowledge by continuously seeking out new information and experiences, and actively applying that knowledge in their field of expertise. This can be done through formal education, such as pursuing a higher degree, or through informal means, such as attending workshops and conferences, reading books and articles, and participating in professional development opportunities.

What are the benefits of reaching the highest level of the Hierarchy of Knowledge?

Reaching the highest level of the Hierarchy of Knowledge, wisdom, brings numerous benefits. It allows individuals to make informed and ethical decisions, solve complex problems, and contribute to the advancement of their field. Wisdom also brings a deeper understanding and appreciation for the complexities and nuances within a subject, and the ability to share that knowledge with others.

Can the Hierarchy of Knowledge be applied to any field or subject?

Yes, the Hierarchy of Knowledge can be applied to any field or subject. It is a universal concept that can be used to understand and measure levels of understanding and expertise in any area. However, the specific levels and definitions may vary slightly depending on the context and field of study.
