How Do You Calculate the Percent Composition of Dopamine?

In summary, percent composition by mass is the percentage of each element present in a compound, calculated by dividing the mass of each element by the total mass of the compound and multiplying by 100. It is important because it gives insight into the chemical and physical properties of a compound and can be used to identify unknown substances. The formula for calculating percent composition by mass is (mass of element/mass of compound) x 100. Percent composition by mass can change if the mass or composition of the compound changes, and it is used in various industries and everyday life to determine nutritional value, ingredient composition, and pollutant levels.

% (by mass) composition

Homework Statement

Dopamine, C8 H11 O2 N is a neutroransmitter. Determine the percent (by mass) composition of each of the elements in dopamite.

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

8C atoms= 12 (12.0) = 44.0amu
11H atoms = 11 (1.0) = 11.0 amu
2O atoms = 2 (16.00) = 32.0 amu
1N atoms = 1 (14.01) = 14.01 amu
total: 101.01 amu

%C (8)(12.0 amu)
______________ = 95.0%
101.01
%H (11)(1.0 amu)
_____________ = 10.8%
101.01

%O (2)(16.00)
_______________ = 31.6%
101.01

%N (1)(14.01)
___________ = 13.8%
101.01
please help/tell me if its correct or not.

8*12 is not 44.

As it were, your calculations indicate a higher mass than is possible.

C8 H11 O2 N

MW = 8*12 + 11 + 2*16 + 14 = 96 + 11 + 32 + 14 = 153

FAQ: How Do You Calculate the Percent Composition of Dopamine?

1. What is percent composition by mass?

Percent composition by mass is the percentage of each element present in a compound, expressed in terms of the mass of the compound. It is calculated by dividing the mass of each element by the total mass of the compound and multiplying by 100.

2. Why is percent composition by mass important?

Percent composition by mass is important because it gives insight into the chemical and physical properties of a compound. It also helps in determining the empirical formula of a compound and can be used to identify unknown substances.

3. How do you calculate percent composition by mass?

The formula for calculating percent composition by mass is: (mass of element/mass of compound) x 100. This will give you the percentage of each element in the compound.

4. Can percent composition by mass change?

Yes, percent composition by mass can change if the mass of the compound changes or if the composition of the compound changes. For example, if a compound undergoes a chemical reaction, the percent composition by mass will change.

5. How is percent composition by mass used in everyday life?

Percent composition by mass is used in many industries, such as pharmaceuticals, food production, and cosmetics. It is also used in environmental testing to determine the composition of pollutants in air, water, and soil. In everyday life, it can be used to determine the nutritional value of food or the ingredients in household products.
