How Far Did the Robber's Car Travel in 6 Seconds with a Forgotten Brick of Gold?

In summary, the conversation discusses a bank robbery where a brick of gold is left on the roof of a car. The question asks about the distance the car traveled in the first 6 seconds, assuming a constant acceleration and a coefficient of friction of 0.4. The solution involves using equations of motion to find the acceleration and then using that value to calculate the distance traveled. The answer is 70.56m.

Homework Statement

During a bank robbery, one of the gangsters forgets a brick of gold on the roof of the
car. Assuming that the car accelerates from rest with a constant acceleration, and that the
brick was on the point of slipping, throughout the acceleration, how far did the car travel
in the first 6s if µs = 0.4?

(the answer is 70.56m)

givens:
x direction---> a=? delta x=? initial velocity=0 final velocity=?
y direction---> a=0 delta y=0 " " " = 0
mu=o.4 t=6

you have to attempt a solution first.

but i am not sure where to start could someone give me a hint

I am assuming the friction to be only between the car and the block.
say the frictional force is f=µs*m*g. but this has to be equal to the force acting on it.
so equate it to m*a and get a value for the acceleration.

Use the equations of motion where you know a, u, and t...and hence find s.

FAQ: How Far Did the Robber's Car Travel in 6 Seconds with a Forgotten Brick of Gold?

What is displacement?

Displacement is a physical quantity that measures the distance and direction from an object's initial position to its final position. It is typically denoted by the symbol "Δx" or "d".

How is displacement different from distance?

Distance is a scalar quantity that measures the length of the path between two points, while displacement is a vector quantity that measures the shortest distance between two points and accounts for direction.

What are some common units for displacement?

The SI unit for displacement is meters (m), but it can also be measured in other units such as centimeters (cm) or kilometers (km).

How is displacement calculated?

Displacement is calculated by subtracting the initial position from the final position. This can be represented by the equation Δx = xf - xi, where xf is the final position and xi is the initial position.

What is the difference between displacement and velocity?

Displacement is a measure of an object's change in position, while velocity is a measure of an object's displacement over time. Velocity takes into account the direction of an object's displacement, while displacement does not.
