AI Thread Summary
British engineers have proposed a hypersonic jet capable of traveling from Europe to Australia in under five hours, utilizing liquid hydrogen as fuel. This fuel choice is touted for its ecological benefits, producing water and nitrous oxide instead of carbon emissions. However, questions arise regarding the environmental impact of hydrogen production, which typically requires significant energy input, potentially undermining its eco-friendly claims unless sourced from renewable or nuclear energy. Additionally, concerns about the inefficiency of hypersonic flight and skepticism about the legitimacy of the project suggest it may be more of a marketing initiative than a viable technological advancement. The jet features a hybrid jet/rocket engine design, but doubts persist regarding the project's authenticity and feasibility.

Hypersonic jet could reach Australia in under five hours

Tue Feb 5, 7:05 AM ET

LONDON (AFP) - British engineers unveiled plans Tuesday for a hypersonic jet which could fly from Europe to Australia in less than five hours.

...

It operates on liquid hydrogen, which is more ecologically friendly as it gives off water and nitrous oxide instead of carbon emissions.

Is this same as scramjet technology, or is it a new technology?

Why's it give off nitrous oxide?

Hydrogen isn't natural in molecular form, so it needs to be generated. That requires energy, so unless they use something like nuclear power to generate the hydrogen, it will most certainly not be ecologically friendly. Also, hypersonic flight itself is extremely inefficient.

Tree hugging hippie crap aside, hypersonic flight is very cool. Their website shows a hybrid jet/rocket engine: http://www.reactionengines.co.uk/sabre.html

Unfortunately, though, what we have here is neither a real company nor a real project. It's just press for the purpose of generating revenue.

This week, I saw a documentary done by the French called Les sacrifiés de l'IA, which was presented by a Canadian show Enquête. If you understand French I recommend it. Very eye-opening. I found a similar documentary in English called The Human Cost of AI: Data workers in the Global South. There is also an interview with Milagros Miceli (appearing in both documentaries) on Youtube: I also found a powerpoint presentation by the economist Uma Rani (appearing in the French documentary), AI...
